Splinters~N~Rust was born out of a desire for a creative outlet while being a stay-at-home mom to two small children. With a love for all things vintage, reclaimed and recycled this small business was launched. Most of our materials are recycled and sourced in and around Hutchinson, Kansas. It serves not only as a studio space but also a public makerspace. The space it open to other area artist to

teach classes. Our goal is bringing art as entertainment at affordable prices! ABOUT THE ARTIST: Janice Richardson, a resident of Hutchinson, Kansas is originally from the Carolinas. She pursued a passion for art after growing up watching her mother find joy in drawing and painting. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at Greensboro College, in Greensboro, NC, she worked for many years in commercial real estate. Painting and upcycling materials was always a hobby. After relocating with her husband to Hutchinson, Kansas and becoming a stay-at-home mom, Janice started Splinters~N~Rust. Over the past 5 years the business has expanded to teaching Pinterest inspired classes to the public.

I want to give a special shout out to my painting student Matt from The Clayworks at Disability Supports- McPherson! Matt never missed a session and was a fun guy to work with and tackled this project with a great attitude!! Even with some visual hurdles, Matt was able to do the value study AND the underpainting washes on two large paintings for the hospital project! Great Job Matt!
You will see these paintings again as they are finished up by another student Andre, in the coming weeks. Both students will get 100% credit and proceeds from one full painting even though we are working as a team on these two paintings!
Matt has named the Beaver painting "Frankie D. Beaver". I can't wait to see what Andre names the raccoon painting!

One year from now, I will be having my own art show at the Clayworks. I am super excited but also terrified about how many paintings I will have to get done this year. A year sounds like a long time to prepare, but it really isn't. It goes by so quickly. So, you will see me hyper focused on this personal goal over the next 12 months.

I am very excited to share with you a new opportunity I have been involved in for the past several weeks. The Clayworks here in Hutchinson reached out to me back in June about collaborating on a special project between them and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. I have been hired part-time by Clayworks to help teach some of the talented clients from Hutchinson and McPherson (12) paintings for the new Pediatrics wing that will be opening later this year.
I worked for several weeks in July to design and prototype 12 paintings with a woodland animal theme and I have been teaching with the clients for a few weeks now. This is a very exciting time to be involved with such a great organization and I am honored to have been asked to participate in such a special project as a local artist.
You will find me mornings Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday at the Clayworks! Our paintings are coming along wonderfully and they are on display for all visitors to watch the progression as we work toward finishing them. I look forward to sharing more with you on my page.
If you haven't ever visited the Clayworks or don't know about the organization, you can visit them online here to find out about their services:
https://theclayworks.com or visit the amazing and inspiring facility & coffee shop at 1125 N Main Street, Hutchinson or in McPherson at 107 N Main.

CITY OF HUTCHINSON ANNOUNCES PROGRESS ON STAR BOND PROJECT

The City of Hutchinson is pleased to announce that it is moving forward with the initial stages of the STAR Bond project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the community's development and economic growth.

The STAR Bond project includes three key components:
1. Landmark Building Redevelopment โ€“ The historic Landmark Building will be redeveloped to preserve its legacy while transforming it into 36 apartment units.
2. Memorial Hall Renovation โ€“ The historic Memorial Hall will undergo renovations to restore its grandeur and make it a central hub for community activities and events.
3. Cosmosphere Expansion โ€“ The Cosmosphere, a renowned space museum, will expand its exhibits and educational programs, attracting more visitors and enriching local cultural offerings.

Mayor Greg Fast said, โ€œThe STAR Bond project is a major opportunity for Hutchinson. By updating our historic buildings and expanding local attractions, weโ€™re making a big investment in our cityโ€™s future. This project will boost our community and drive lasting growth.โ€

Strategic Growth Director Dave Sotelo emphasized the importance of the project, noting, โ€œThe STAR Bond project represents a strategic investment in our cityโ€™s future. By revitalizing key areas and expanding our local offerings, weโ€™re not only enhancing the quality of life for our residents but also positioning Hutchinson as a vibrant and attractive destination.โ€

The City plans to hold a public hearing in September, during which the City Council will consider the approval of the district. This step is crucial, but it is just the beginning of a longer process to bring these projects to fruition.

STAR Bond Approval Process: The approval process for STAR Bonds involves several steps:
1. Approval of the STAR Bond District: The city will establish a designated area where the STAR Bonds will be used.
2. Approval of the STAR Bond Project Plan: Detailed plans for each project within the district will be reviewed and approved.
3. Issuance of Bonds: Once approved, the bonds will be issued to fund the projects.

How STAR Bonds Work:
โ€ข Revenue Generation: STAR Bonds allow the city to capture incremental sales tax revenues generated within the designated district. This means the difference between pre-development โ€œbaseโ€ sales taxes and the increase in sales taxes following new construction or redevelopment.
โ€ข No Tax Increase: Importantly, STAR Bonds do not involve additional taxation or tax abatement. Instead, they temporarily redirect future sales tax revenues from the development within the district. Existing sales tax rates remain unchanged for residents.
โ€ข Funding Mechanism: The bonds are paid off through the new sales tax revenue generated by the development. This ensures that the projects are self-financing and do not place a burden on taxpayers.

Historical Success: In 2006, Hutchinson became the first city in Kansas to establish a bifurcated STAR Bond district to invest in one of Hutchinsonโ€™s most treasured attractions, Strataca. The bonds issued have since been paid off, demonstrating the program's potential for success.

The City of Hutchinson, along with its partners, is committed to revitalizing the downtown area and enhancing the communityโ€™s attractions. This STAR Bond project represents a significant opportunity for economic growth and development, promising a brighter future for Hutchinson.

My Story

Splinters~N~ Rust was born out of a desire for an artistic creative outlet while being a stay-at-home mom to two small children. With a love for all things vintage, reclaimed and recycled this small business was launched. After 4 years this business has taken on new life and expanded to teach classes with a new DIY Workshop concept opening fall of 2019. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Janice Richardson, a resident of Hutchinson, Kansas is originally from the Carolinas. She pursued a passion for art after growing up watching her mother find joy in drawing and painting. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Greensboro College, in Greensboro, NC. After relocating with her husband to Hutchinson, Kansas and becoming a stay-at-home mom, Janice decided it was time to start her own business and explore her love for Pinterest inspired projects using recycled materials found locally.

Splinters-N-Rust DIY Workshop will be a new option for Hutchinson and the surrounding community to attend Make-n-Take classes from area artists, learn new skills & experiment with power tools under the guidance of a knowledgeable staff. This public studio, constructed from upcycled materials with a true Kansas feel will offer customized projects, and be a venue to host birthday parties for kids and adults of any age! Join us for your next team building or holiday party!
