🏛️ OPERA FUN FACT: Opera was actually invented by complete accident!
Back in the late 1500s, a group of Italian musicians, poets, and scientists called the Florentine Camerata set out to recreate ancient Greek drama. Because they mistakenly believed that the ancient Greeks sang all of their theatrical plays, they ended up inventing an entirely new genre: dramatic storytelling through continuous music.
We are so glad they made that mistake! 🎶 Fast forward over 400 years, and we are getting ready to celebrate this incredible art form during our 73rd season.

The HCMG celebrates Wilson Luquire as he retires after 30 years as Program Director and Artist Committee Chair.
Mayor Tommy Battle has declared Friday, June 12, 2026 as Wilson Luquire Day in the City of Huntsville and encourage all citizens to recognize and celebrate Wilson Luquire’s remarkable contributions to our community, our educational institutions, and the cultural enrichment of the City of Huntsville.
