Lovers of the Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse,
Since the Coffeehouse closed in 2020, and the Patio restaurant after that, Huntsville hasn’t had much opportunity to listen to original music from local artists. Fortunately, that will change next month with the beginning of “Sundown at Sam’s,” a free outdoor music series held on an old-timey stage at the SHSU Museum. This series was designed by Darren Grant, a longtime Coffeehouse attendee and supporter, to be a successor to the Coffeehouse—in fact, the idea first took hold in a conversion between him and me in December 2020. All musicians are from our area and most focus on original music. There will be some folk, some Americana, some blues, and some bluegrass, all in a beautiful, peaceful outdoor setting with the sun setting behind the trees.

This year’s series includes three concerts: Logan McCune (Americana) and Jesse Wortham (Blues/Gospel) on April 20, Gail Ryder and Mary-Charlotte Young (both Singer-Songwriters) on May 4, and Tin Top Road (Bluegrass) on May 18. The concert and parking are free, just bring a blanket or lawn chairs and (if you want) your own food and drink. All concerts begin at 6:30 pm and end by 9 pm. I have made a new page for Galveston Folk Family Concert series. It will be a similar format to Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse in Huntsville, but we have moved to Galveston. Please like it! I have set up and event for the November 12 Dana Cooper concert on the new page.

Concert series at the UU Fellowship of Galveston County

11/30/2020

We are sad to announce that we are closing down Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse, and refiguring Johnson Studio House Concerts. We had ten plus years with about 80 concerts at TWC, about 50 concerts at JSHC, and have done over 60 musical sermons at Thoreau Woods UU Church, with mostly the same artists from our concert series. When COVID hit, I converted all the remaining concerts already scheduled to online concerts. We had our last Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse with Jack Williams on November 21, and we do have the following concerts scheduled, probably online, via Johnson Studio House Concerts:

January 9: Heather Pierson
March 27: Michael Henchman
April 17: Rudi Harst
May 22: Shanna in a Dress
June 6: Grant Peeples
September 18: Jaime Michaels

In July, we bought a townhouse in Galveston. We plan to sell our house in Huntsville in a couple of years and move there full-time. We recently resigned as members from TWUUC, and have joined Galveston UU Fellowship. We have mixed feelings as Pam has been a member of TWUUC for 26 years, and James for over half that. We have many good memories to take with us. We are not scheduling any new concerts at this time. Musical sermons will be scheduled by current church leadership at [email protected]. When it is safe to have concerts in person, we hope to have live concerts in Galveston. We really miss our folk family.

We are happy to welcome back accomplished singer songwriter and civil rights activist Reggie Harris. He has been a vital part of the international folk and acoustic music family for over 40 years. He has traveled the world spreading hope and light to audiences of all ages. Reggie is consummate musician, a Kennedy Center teaching artist, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar and the music education director for the UU Living Legacy Project, an organization that leads pilgrimages to sites of the Modern Civil Rights movement throughout the South.
Reggie continues to earn wide acclaim and standing ovations from audiences and peers throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. With the release of his chart topping CD “Ready to Go” Reggie has staked a new claim as a song leader, an insightful songwriter and an activist for global peace and justice.
