Congratulations to SHSU alum Johanna Grace Wylie who is playing Ophelia Freeman in DOES IT MAKE A SOUND? at the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston! The staged reading takes place Wednesday, June 17 at 7:00 pm.

Johanna earned a BFA in Theatre with Acting/Directing emphasis from Sam Houston State University in 2023.

DOES IT MAKE A SOUND? is a new full-length historical drama by Houston playwright and theatre educator Velvia Keithley. Set in Texas and Boston in 1895, the play follows Ophelia Freeman, a brilliant young Black woman pursuing a medical education in a world determined to silence her voice, and Katherine MacNeil, her white half-sister whose privilege cannot protect her from insecurity, expectation, and the limitations placed upon women of the era. As the sisters struggle toward the same impossible dream, they are forced to confront questions of race, morality, family loyalty, and who history chooses to remember.

A stirring and Pulitzer-winning drama, PICNIC takes place in the joint backyards of two women during the Labor Day holiday in a small Kansas town in the 1950s, where the appearance of a handsome outsider upends their life.

One house belongs to Flo Owens, who lives there with her two daughters, Madge and Millie, along with a schoolteacher boarder. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly invalid mother. When the young man named Hal Carter takes a shine to Madge, their sudden passion for each other disrupts the mundane routines of both houses, causing long-dormant desires to explode with ramifications of love and heartbreak that no one expects.

Ethan plays the role of Frederic Charlus (also Ensemble and Phoebus cover) in Houston Broadway Theatre's production of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. The show runs June 16 - July 5, 2026 at The Cullen Theatre (Wortham Center).

Ethan earned a BFA in Musical Theatre from Sam Houston State University.

Congratulations to Sara Sofia Suchoff who is serving as understudy for the play A PLAUSIBLE HISTORY OF XICOTENCATL II by Jaymes Sanchez, part of the Sin Muros Festival at Stages!

The show runs June 13 and 14 on the Rochelle and Max Levit Stage.

Every year, Stages celebrates the range of Latinx voices and stories, reflecting the diversity of Texas with a play reading festival open to our community.

Sara Sofia is a junior pursuing a BFA in Theatre with Acting/Directing emphasis at Sam Houston State University.
