It was a rainy day in Taormina, Sicily but I got out on the streets of this beautiful but tiny town anyway. There was a Dior store and all the other exclusive shops that you’d expect to find in much larger cities (and that I would not be shopping in for sure). The facades of the buildings in this part of town were built around the 3rd century BC around a Greco-Roman theater that has stunning views of Mt Etna (still an active volcano BTW). And yes, this is another place from my series “A Thousand Miles or More”. You know the drill, DM me with questions or interest in purchasing. ❤️

You may have seen this painting of mine of a carousel in Prague with a grandmother and little girl (who was obviously in charge of where they went next) but today here’s the photos I took that inspired it. If you look closely at the carousel you’ll see that each scene across the top of the carousel, and all the parts below it are like their own little works of art. This was one of those grand European carousels from the early 1900s, bearing little resemblance to the carousels of today, or even those from the county fairs of my youth (although that was a long time ago too).

Budapest is an interesting city — Buda on one side, and Pest on the other side of the Danube. I remember it being a city with people on the move, getting on and off the yellow trams that are part of a system that’s been running for 150 years. With 40 lines that run all over the city, it’s one of the largest tram systems in the world. This little painting is from “A Thousand Miles or More”, my Huntsville Airport Artway show. DM me for more info or interest in purchasing.

There are so many cafes all over Paris and this one happens to be inside the Musee d’Orsay. You’re looking through the back side of one of three giant clocks that face outward from this building that was once a train station. I called this “Lunch Time” (get it?) with all the servers hustling around and all the tables full of patrons. Another painting still available from my show “A Thousand Miles or More”. DM me with questions.

Throughout Portugal you see these old buildings, many crumbling and in disrepair, with gorgeous tile work on the front. If you know me you know how many photos I take during a trip and Portugal was certainly no exception. It doesn’t have to be a beautiful photo to use for a painting; it just has to be good enough for me to remember what captured my eye in that moment. Of course for this one it was the tile work. If you’re interested in any of the paintings from my show “A Thousand Miles or More” several are still available to purchase. Send me a DM with questions.

It was a beautiful day in Lucerne and this girl was gazing across the lake at the iconic twin spires of the Church of St. Leodegar. The air and even the water in Lucerne was remarkably clear; you could see the bottom of Lake Lucerne several feet down. This painting was part of my show “A Thousand Miles or More” from the Huntsville Airport that ran Jan-April 15. When you’re at our airport always be sure to check out the Artway on the second level above ticketing. They always have something interesting to see there, sponsored by in Decatur.

This is from Scotland but I’m not sure where as we did lots of driving and I have hundreds of beautiful shots taken throughout the countryside. It was hard to choose what to paint and I feared I could not capture the majesty of the mountains and the immense scope of the rolling plains beneath them. So this little hillside with the old barn and pretty flowers is what I chose. Several of the paintings from my Airport Artway show are still available; DM me with interest or questions.

This painting was part of “A Thousand Miles or More” but if you’ve been following me awhile you might recognize it. It was painted from a photo I took in the Dominican Republic at the local market. His hand was lightly resting on the rickety pole above him and his shoe was barely hanging on his foot so I called it “Hanging On”. That seems to be how the people of the DR live their daily lives. And yet their faith is strong. Maybe there’s a lesson for us in that.

From my show “A Thousand Miles or More” this is Barcelona, Spain. What a beautiful city. My favorite part of our time there was wandering all the side streets in the Gothic Quarter where we stayed. Filled with quaint restaurants, shops, churches and art galleries these winding streets were so interesting. You never knew what was around the next corner. The old iron street lamps gave off a soft glow as evening fell. Wonderful smells of tapas and paella floated all around. Church bells rang tolling the Angelus prayer, marking the end of the workday. The locals strolled alongside tourists and no one appeared to be in a hurry. I know I wasn’t.

We spent the morning at Monet’s home and gardens in Giverney, France. I took hundreds of photos in this place, including the water lilies and the canoes that still rest under the weeping willows in his pond. Then we went into the charming town and this cafe caught my eye. I liked the shady courtyard, as well the angles of the planters and the red umbrellas. Doesn’t it look like the perfect spot for lunch?!?
