Thank you to everyone who came out to Burning at Both Ends at !!
Had so much fun creating this piece for the exhibition. It’s my first oil painting since graduating two years ago, I’m really looking forward to getting back into making visual art other than drag 🔥
Main painting is inspired by a photo of

“Indigo Holding Levi (Me in Drag Holding Myself as a Baby)”
2023 oil and rhinestones on canvas 36”x36”

Wanted to share this painting before pride month is over💛
This is one of my most personal works to date. Throughout the conceptualization and creation of the body of work for my capstone show, one of my biggest goals was to work on healing my inner child, and that’s what this painting represents. The composition is inspired by paintings of “Madonna and the Christ Child” from the Renaissance era. Many of those paintings would be framed with gold and precious stones, which is why I framed mine with plastic rhinestones and imagery of abstracted blue popsicles. Finding the art of drag has perhaps been the most instrumental thing I’ve done to heal my inner child and unlearn so much of the toxic and heteronormative rhetoric that I was taught as a kid. Drag is the epitome of everything that was kept from me and everything that I yearned for as a closeted q***r kid, and it has been essential in healing my inner child and becoming the artist and person I am today.

(Also sorry for being so slow with sharing my work from my capstone, it’s literally been almost two years at this point lol)

“Playing Outside”
2022 oil on canvas 36”x36”
(Sold)

The moments I spent outdoors as a child were some of my most formative. I had a deep love for bugs and turtles and I loved catching crawdabbers and salamanders in the creek. Milkweed grew along all the fields and roads around my grandparents’ house and attracted butterflies and all kinds of other insects. I also loved riding bikes with my cousins. My first bike was a hand-me-down from a family friend. It was sparkly pink and purple, had little butterfly charms on the spokes, and said “Glamour Girl” in big letters on the side. When you’re a q***r child, the adults in your life will often make sure (even inadvertently) to keep you away from the things you like. I always loved “girl toys” and “girl colors.” My favorite color has always been purple, and my grandma would be sure to keep anything purple out of my grasp because she thought it would “turn me gay” (y’all can see how well that worked). For some reason, this bike was one of the very few exceptions. When I outgrew it, my next bike was blue and frankly not glamorous at all.
Along the sides of the canvas I included small rocks from the creek outside my grandparents’ house.

(2/5 of my senior capstone paintings)

“Alter Egos: The True American” was an exploration of the different archetypes of “Americans” through the lens of dystopian fashion with an emphasis on using pre-owned clothing and materials.

“Downstairs”
2023 oil on canvas 36”x36”

This is one of my favorite paintings of mine to date. I have such a deep love for the interior decor of rural Appalachian homes, and this piece is an homage to the downstairs living room of my grandparents’ house. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. When I was by myself I would play with my cousins’ Barbie dolls. Notably, I cut one’s hair short and colored it with blue and green highlighters. When you’re a closeted q***r child, you often take advantage of any alone time to express your q***rness. For me, in this setting, it was restyling my cousins’ dolls and dancing around “like a girl” when I knew no one was watching. Apart from that, I loved snooping around, looking through my Papa’s old cigar boxes full of cool rocks, arrowheads, and pieces of broken ceramics that he had found over the years. He and I always shared a love of walking through the creek or the woods and just finding little treasures on the ground. There was also an old green desk that was full of stuff; from old photos from the 60’s and 70’s to a bottle of shark teeth to one of my Papa’s baby shoes, there was no shortage of little things to observe and look through. All of this within wood grain walls covered in deer heads, trophy fish, muzzle loader supplies, kitschy wood-carvings, and framed photos of rural landscapes.

A painting inspired by the weird nostalgia surrounding the memory of falling asleep on the couch as a kid, waking up at 3 a.m., and seeing obscure infomercials on the TV. Also my dog.
