Maple Burl clusters sure are beautiful, but moving one intact is a different story. A little cumbersome and a lot of careful maneuvering, but we got this one loaded in one piece and safely on its way to its new home.

Burl is one of the most beloved figures in woodworking because you never quite know what you’re going to get. Willow Burl is a perfect example, with swirling grain, clusters of eyes, and movement in just about every direction.

There’s a lot that goes into an urban tree salvage before a tree ever comes down. The right tree, the right condition, the right location, and a safe way to recover as much usable material as possible.

But once it’s down, the process gets a whole lot slower. Years of air drying, months in the kiln, and plenty of patience before that tree is finally ready to become slabs and find its next project. It’s a long process, but when the alternative for many urban trees is a chipper, landfill, or firewood, we think it’s well worth the wait.

Buckeye Burl is perfectly imperfect. Its voids, irregular grain, and unpredictable structure make it nearly impossible to turn into traditional veneer or plywood, but as a slab, those same imperfections are exactly what make it so beautiful.

Redwood trees are a national treasures. Old-growth redwood trees make for extremely tight and straight grain patterns but the roots and base of the tree can produce some really insane figure like this one in the video. You can expect to see the signature lace burl or flamed fiddle back in these figured redwood slabs.
