The style is strong and fluid, maintaining an organic quality that emphasizes natural human movement.

We are very proud to introduce to you our new (and returning) dancers for this season!
We have a very exciting year ahead of us including performances throughout SoCal and NYC!
In our continued efforts to unite the dance community, offer new and innovative work for our audiences, and allow these dancers a safe and open space to explore their talents, we are confident this season will be one of our best!

!!Calling All Dancers!!

AkomiDance is seeking dancers for our 2022-2023 season!
___
This year, as we continue to fulfill our mission of uniting the Southern California dance community, we are proud to offer our dancers a season stipend including additional per performance pay.
Our calendar for this season already includes live performances in Long Beach, LA, and Santa Barbara. We will also show work in our newest concert, New Wave in New York City. And of course, we will culminate our season in the 7th annual Orange County Dance Festival.

Auditions will take place at Clifton Dance Project in Huntington Beach @ 7:30pm (Aug. 31) and will include elements of Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Partnering. We are seeking dancers who have strong technique, passion, and display a fervent interest in building camaraderie within the AkomiDance family.

AkomiDance promises to provide a season filled with performance and networking opportunities while offering bi-monthly company classes free to AkomiDancers.

Taking the OCDF Pro stage TONIGHT, Saturday May 7th at 7:00pm, our final ARTIST FEATURE: !!

Chelsea Brooks has been performing and teaching in the dance industry for the past 25 years. She graduated with honors from Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in dance with a choreographic concentration. In Chicago, Chelsea danced as an apprentice with Cerqua Rivera Dance Theater and as a company member with Noumenon Dance Ensemble, Innervation Dance Cooperative SPEAKS, Tapestry Dance Company, Project606, and Core Project. Her choreography has been showcased in Going Dutch all female choreographers showcase (Chicago), Delve showcase (Chicago), MixMatch Dance Festival (Santa Monica), RAW Orange County, RAW Downtown LA, and SoCal Dance Invitational (Long Beach). In 2017, Chelsea launched 7th Street Dance company with her co-founder, Charles Fentroy and has continued the company with her current co-director, Alexa Taylor.

OCDF Pro is tonight!! Check out our next ARTIST FEATURE & !

Dorcas Roman is a dancer and choreographer native to Puerto Rico, active in dance and theatre for over 20 years. She currently serves as artistic director of Dorcas Román Dance Theatre (DRDT), a company, which has received high praise from national, and international press. Roman has been touring nationally and internationally bringing her work and her teachings to places such as, New York, Texas, Vermont, Utah, Boston, and Chicago, while also participating in residencies and dance festivals around the world to places such as, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Spain, Germany, Greece and most recently China. Her international experiences and cultural heritage infuse not only her performances and choreography, but her approaches to teaching as well. She is certified in Hatha, Shakti Naam Yoga. Román has an MFA in choreography from UCLA and a BA in Theatre from UPR. 


Vannia Ibarguen is a Peruvian dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, and Artistic Director of ​​VIDA - Vannia Ibarguen Dance Arts, a contemporary dance troupe. She has received awards in United States, Peru, Argentina, Cuba, and Colombia. Vannia is a recognized International Performing Arts consultant, collaborating since 2011 with Global Water Dances, an international initiative that raises consciousness on the critical need for safe drinking water, and now she is serving as Artistic Director. She was the Communications Manager of the Peruvian Dance Council, IT Consultant, and Magazine writer. Vannia also organizes "Encuentros de Pura Danza", an annual dance festival held in Lima, Peru since 2012, in collaboration with the Peruvian-American Cultural Institute (ICPNA)

OCDF Pro ARTIST FEATURE on !

Benita Bike is the Director of Benita Bike’s DanceArt, a 41-year-old chamber modern dance company based in Los Angeles. Benita studied with Utah Repertory Dance Theatre and the faculties of Bennington College and the University of Arizona. In New York, she studied with Robert Christopher, Emmy Devine, Karen Levy, and Ruth Currier. Benita’s dance work has been shown in the U.S. and in Europe. Benita was an Artist-in-residence at Massachusetts College of Art. Benita was the Chair of the Boston Dance Alliance and a member of the Boston Cultural Corporation’s Curatorial Board. In Los Angeles, she served on the Board of the Dance Resource Center. Benita taught dance at her studio in Boston, at Boston Center for Adult Education, Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro and at Whittier College. Benita was Co-producer of the Fountain Theatre’s annual Festival of Solos & Duets in Hollywood, and she was Coordinator of the annual dance series at the Brand Library in Glendale. Her work has been supported by numerous grants from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, Center for Cultural Innovation, California Arts Council, Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, and the cities of West Hollywood and Culver City.

We missed one! Performing TONIGHT in OCDF Rising Artists and bringing tap dance to our stage! ARTIST FEATURE on !

Christy Hernandez is the Executive Director of Dance 4 Joy Ministries, a non-profit dance ministry & studio in Costa Mesa and Irvine CA that serves in communities, churches, and schools in the US and abroad training up the next generation to proclaim the Gospel in the art of dance. She is also the Director/Instructor of Tap Dance at the Academy for the Performing Arts @ Huntington Beach High School. She is a professional tap dancer, master teacher, choreographer and producer in Southern California, holding a BA in Creative Arts and Dance from San Jose State University (SJSU) and a teaching credential in Elementary Education from California State University Fullerton. At SJSU she studied extensively in Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz under Gary Masters and Fred Matthews of the Limon Company. Christy also danced as a principal member and featured soloist with the L.A. based company, Rhapsody In Taps for eight years and was mentored by Sam Weber, Fred Strickler, and Linda Sohl-Ellison. Christy created her own company, Sound Effects in 1998 and mentored many professionals in the art of Tap Dancing including Leah Silva, artistic director of Reverb Tap Company.

OCDF Pro ARTIST FEATURE on: !

Since establishing their non-profit status in 2016, Kairos Dance Co has explored social topics to inspire discussion and promote action within its community. Their 2016 debut of ‘Light in the Moonless Midnight’, a full-length piece focusing on erasing the stigma of mental illness, was met with an emotionally stirred audience response. The company performed this work again June 2017 and was invited by Tim Robbins’ Actor’s Gang to perform their new work, entitled "Paradigm" in 2018. This full-length piece explored social media and its effect on society today. In 2019 the company debuted “She Speaks”, focusing on women's empowerment and female social stigmas. The company has also touched on other socially relevant topics such as domestic abuse, and separation at the border today. These pieces, combined with personal interviews and multi-media, engage the audience in an emotionally powerful way. Kairos Dance Co begins the conversation... and encourages you, the audience, to continue it.

Choreographer and dance educator, Hazel graduated with a BA in dance from San Jose State University. Founder of contemporary dance company, Kairos Dance Co (est. 2006), her work has been performed throughout Los Angeles, Palm Desert, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Colorado and Utah. Kairos’ September 2016 debut of ‘Light in the Moonless Midnight’, a full-length piece focusing on erasing the stigma of mental illness, was met with an emotionally stirred audience response. The company performed this work again June 2017 and was invited by Tim Robbins’ Actor’s Gang to perform “Paradigm” (effects of social media) in February 2018, and “She Speaks” (women's empowerment) in April 2019. Resident choreographer of the youth musical theater program Puttin' On Productions in Manhattan Beach, Regional musical theatre credits include LA Times’ Critic’s Choice of Chance Theater’s “A Chorus Line” (2016), Ovation Award Best Musical winners “Lizzie- the Musical” (2019) and "Fun Home" (2020), and Right Angle Entertainment’s National Tour of “Musical Thrones”.

Performing in Pro this weekend, ARTIST FEATURE on !

BrockusRED is a proud LA based company that produces the work of the artistic director Deborah Brockus and has performed nationally and internationally. Themes in our dances explore the human condition in relationship to the natural work. With a fascination on interwoven ideas and patterns in nature and the complexities of the human mind and emotions. Using many styles of dance to create, Brockus’ work is characterized by energy, tension and relationships. A voracious space mover, the work fills the space and occupies a drop of space. The company has performed in Europe, South Korea and across the USA.

Deborah Brockus has been labeled ‘the single most important person in Southland dance” an “impresario”, ‘ the mother superior of LA dance” and ”tireless” by the Los Angles Times for her involvement in establishing the local dance scene as a producer, choreographer, teacher.
As both a dancer and choreographer Brockus has worked nationally and internationally on stage, in film and television. Working in modern, jazz, musical theater and social dance styles.“Followers of L.A.’s modern-dance scene know that, when it comes to talent Deborah Brockus is a big name, with a great company (Brockus Project Dance Company) and a keen eye for talent” City Beat. She is the artistic director of Brockus Project Dance Company founded in 1991, now Brockus:RED. Her choreographic style blurs the line between modern and jazz techniques, reflecting both European influences and East and West Coast training.
Brockus is the producer of Dance in LA showcases, which include: Los Angeles Dance Festival, Spectrum (local professionals), New Perspectives (High School Invitational), Split (mixing local and out of state companies), Caught Between (multi-media) and Why We Dance Series (dialogue between artists and audiences). The Spectrum Dance in LA series received a Lester Horton award for “Outstanding Production of a Festival or Series” in 2002 and was nominated again in 2004 for Spectrum and 2003 for Split.
