Check out our feature in Meer on José Picayo’s latest exhibit, up at Robin Rice Gallery through June 21st 2026.

“Picayo, renowned for fashion and still-life photography, communicates quirky yet formal elegance. His portraits, appearing strong and severe at times, resonate with elements of humor and beauty. Refusing labels, he is very eclectic when his choice of subjects or in defining a particular style and is always consistent in his meticulous technique. His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.”

Is your beach house ready for Memorial Day? We are getting ready for our next exhibition by

“In my work, stillness is not a lack of motion - it is an act of being present.”  In “Their Still Water Runs Deep,” we are transported to the ocean shore, where faceless bathers in vintage bathing suits and bathing caps stand still in water.  They dissolve into the calmness of blue blocks of color.  In “Boundless Love,” a white headscarf adorns a monochromatic figure, its quick, expressive brushstrokes a tribute to the artist’s mother and the Jackie O elegance of that era.  In “Gilded 2025 #1,” an arresting and formal 6-foot figure in a gold-leafed dress, long black gloves, and a tall hat fills the canvas. The surface of the dress holds reflection and density, shaping the figure into a still presence with a sense of quiet power and eminence. In “Girls Waiting on Mars,” figures are suspended on the red planet, held in a state of pause between arrival and continuation.
For Maya, “the plan is never a plan. I begin a painting by sketching directly into the paint, so I don’t lose any spontaneity. I sculpt figures using blocks of color, adding and subtracting until there is an edited space. That space invites intimacy and stillness, which creates room for the viewer’s experience.”

You're invited the the opening reception for José Picayo “35 years in Photographs“ this Saturday, April 25 from 5pm to 7pm

This exhibition, “35 Years in Photographs" is Picayo’s 10th solo show at Robin Rice Gallery. It includes a selection of photographs spanning 1991-2025.

Picayo, renowned for fashion and still-life photography, communicates quirky yet formal elegance. His portraits, appearing strong and severe at times, resonate with elements of humor and beauty. Refusing labels, he is very eclectic when his choice of subjects or in defining a particular style and is always consistent in his meticulous technique. His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.

An unapologetic user of film, Picayo, prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for his personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” His passion for older photographic processes is complemented by his use of both 20” x 24” and 8” x 10” Polaroids, as well as the use of large-format cameras for his commercial work. For Picayo, large-format film is a medium where he can capture a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough.

You are invited to the opening reception of 35 Years in Photographs by José Picayo. The reception will be held on April 25, 2026 from 5 pm to 7 pm at 234 Warren Street, Hudson, NY 12534

After 28 years of absence, Picayo returns to his native Cuba. He captures the world he left when he was six years old. Memories of old clothes hung to dry in the sun, and of old washbasins in the yards of his Havana neighborhood have been translated into images of a silent and evanescent presence. Showing the deterioration through the patina that time and circumstance has left upon it, these images were easily recovered. The inhabitants, the island’s architecture, and its customs seemed to be suspended in time.

Feel right at home at the Robin Rice Gallery.

( This pictured is only 11 out of the 140 images in the exhibition )

The Winter Salon Exhibition featuring gallery artists and guest artisan, metal worker, and jeweler, Alistair McCowan.
Rice brings together the works of her gallery artists. Inside the front entrance as you enter the gallery, displayed on three shelves will display all the paintings and drawings. The walls of the main exhibition space will be mosaics of various-sized photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung salon-style to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Rice strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. “This is my favorite exhibition, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “There is something for everyone."
