Time and Space Limited

Time and Space Limited Making changes in the world through innovative arts programming that awakens individual imagination and creativity. Join us today! The action is key.

β€œTheater provides the ways and means for understanding problems and achieving a solution. A group of artists agrees on a text and then acts on it. Not the product but the process of action; this is a model we use.”
-Linda Mussmann, Co- Director, Time & Space Limited. TSL uses this concept of how theater works, as a blueprint for everything the company approaches. Time & Space Limited Theater Comp

any was founded in NYC in 1973. In 1991, TSL moved to Hudson, New York, where it expanded its role as an avant garde theater company to include becoming a community arts organization, while always keeping theater at its core. TSL’s programming spotlights the powerful role of the arts in awakening individual imaginations and fostering community participation. Whether offering people their first experience with live theater or opera, providing workshops and special enrichment projects for young people that include theater, art, movie-making, circus performance and gardening, or initiating discussions of local and global political issues, TSL is always looking to set off the spark that benefits and alters individual lives. At its location in Hudson, TSL is both a beacon for change in Upstate New York and a national model, providing its community with an arts organization that is committed to constructing relationships on a local level. We hope other artists follow our lead in demonstrating that art can be a powerful voice for change, by bringing their work, their passion, and their concerns to their communities.

It is a beautiful day here in Hudson. NY. Time passes as we gaze in to the crystal ball helping us see the future. How is it looking from where you are sitting? Right now we are raising money for Spring Tonic. These funds get us from one thing to another thing and while we are thinking of moving from one thing to another thing we are thinking of the future and how to make this place we have built have a future. This is a complex idea but no less daunting than when we first dreamed of such a thing---a long life in the making of art and chaos. This making of theater changed my life and many many other lives along the way. TSL was started in 1973 on the lower east side in New York City in a little store front on Bond Street---I was given a chance to make a little theater and make a performance---I had milk crates for seats and paper and masking tape to make scenery---we had a great show--I directed THE BALD SOPRANO by Eugene Ionesco and then a door opened and I was offered a permanent space in a church Hall at the Universalist Church on 4 West 76th Street and this offered me another opportunity to do more theater and here I directed many performances--here I learned how to use time and space and "found" materials to make my theater--here I learned how to make my own lights for the theater that served my own vision of my theater--doors and more doors continued to open--if you want to know more about the future plans here as we continue to open more doors please reach out...have a nice day!!!! April is a time of renewal---I know hope is a hard road to travel now---but it is what we know best when all seems kind of dark.

From director Suzannah Herbert, Natchez captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town; a layered mosaic of people contending with the weight of the past in a place where it is always present. Equal parts amusing and disturbing, we journey through an antebellum tourist destination at a crossroads as it grapples with a deeply troubled history that is so thoroughly ingrained in its present, we’re left to wonder if it’s actually past at all.
