Since I've been asked about 436 times for my thoughts on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees this year, I feel obliged to opine. :) For the most part, this is the first year I can remember that I have pretty much no complaints with any of the inductees. There are many things I would have done differently, but they always seem to chump up and ignore people that any real follower of the band (or the band themselves) feel should be included...
Steve Miller - Absolutely belongs there. Should have been in years ago. A career spanning over 40 years, millions of albums and concert tickets sold, and when he decides to show it, a great guitar player.
Chicago - Again, a no-brainer. Masters of their instruments... Kath, Seraphine and Cetera in particular. The 80's schlock made a lot of people forget that they were a groundbreaking progressive band. They had "signature" songs sung by multiple lead singers, which is a really rare accomplishment. Those of you snickering, go listen to any of the first 4 records, and then come back with your opinion.
NWA - Maybe surprisingly, but I have no beef with them being there. Yeah, it's Rap, and there are other worthy "rock" bands that have been ignored, but they were truly groundbreaking and influential, and in the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis and others... more "rock and roll" than many.
Cheap Trick - For my money, one of the finest rock bands ever. Period. 40 years on and still incredible. Fabulous songs, fabulous playing, and a singer whose voice seems to never age. There are not enough superlatives to express my love for Cheap Trick.
Now the big one... DEEP PURPLE !!! FINALLY!!! - the hall finally decides to correct the most glaring omission and induct the greatest band ever to grace God's green earth. But, in typical Hall snobbery they chose to omit some of the members. Those in: Paice, Lord & Blackmore - the band was their vision, and they are pretty much the core components in most versions of the band. Rod Evans - sang their early hits... plus should be there for the first Captain Beyond record anyway. Gillan & Glover - the missing pieces the original 3 needed to complete the best band ever. Coverdale & Hughes - Incredibly after G&G left, they found 2 replacements that were amazing in their own right. Hughes is in a league of his own, and, hair band jokes aside, David Coverdale is one of the finest blues/rock singers to throw his head back and shout! The glaring omissions... Nick Simper was there for the first three lps along with Evans, so I'm not sure how you get one without the other. Joe Lynn Turner, much like Coverdale, is an incredible, yet often unrecognized singer. Don Airey has played with more bands on more records and on more tours than virtually any keyboard player ever, and is certainly HOF worthy. Steve Morse - like him in Purple or not, he's been in the band longer than Blackmore was, and is one of the best guitarists on the planet. He's the main reason the band continues today and should be in also. Now the most egregious of all...TOMMY BOLIN - Again, many didn't like him in Purple, although I wholeheartedly disagree. Come Taste The Band is a great record, and yes, he's horrible on the "Rises Over Japan" video, but get the "On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat" boot... he absolutely kills! He should get inducted as a solo artist for his 2 great albums, the two James Gang LPs he's on, and of course, Billy Cobham's Spectrum.
So, in conclusion, a pretty good "class" for once. Purple finally in where they belong, and a couple others that were long overdue finally make it. Now on to complaining about why Thin Lizzy, UFO, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, T Rex, Sweet, The NY Dolls, Yes and, of course, THE MC5 ! aren't in.
Hope you all have happy and safe holidays!
Sean.
