Happy Pride Month! 🌈

Water, Moon is a short experimental film by visual artist Angel Lartigue that focuses on the pilgrimage site of 1800s curandero, Don Pedro Jaramillo, in South Texas. Presenting a ceremonial performance within the shrine and burial place of the late shaman, the film includes a soundtrack by H C – (M) and video captured by Tere Garcia. Lartigue held a screening for the film alongside a ceremonial gathering as part of the knowledge-building research lab and exhibition, Overlapping Territories.

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

rasgos asiáticos – sobremesa, written by San Antonio-raised and Austin-based artist Virginia Grise with an installation by Los Angeles-based designer Tanya Orellana, transformed the Train Shed next to the Silos at Sawyer Yards into a market of memories—a site-specific, multisensory experiential installation. Told through inherited stories, fragmented memories, historical reimaginings, and recurring dreams, rasgos asiáticos explored the fluidity of borders and time, unearthing hidden histories at the confluence of China, Mexico, and the United States.

The project was created in collaboration with artist and chef Verónica Castillo, director Kendra Ware, sound designer Daniel Gower, and creative producer Megan E. Carter.

Visionary Futures was a virtual series of performances, conversations, videos, and social media interventions that critically explored questions of the future through the personal lenses of q***r and non-binary artists of color.

Considering the ways we survive and the legacies we leave behind, the artists in Visionary Futures– Antonius-Tín Bui, Chandrika, Lovie Olivia, Preetika Rajgariah, S Rodriguez, Y2K, and the digital platform Time Zone– imagined possible trajectories through a variety of activations and gestures.

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin’s large-scale multimedia exhibition, 50 States: Louisiana, unearthed a 1720s history of a same-sex couple involved in the burgeoning indigo trade in colonial Louisiana. The work connected this story to a series of gay Mardi Gras Balls held at the New Orleans Longshoremen’s Union Hall in the 1960s. Through video, sculpture, and sound, the installation enveloped audiences in 300 years of q***r life along the Mississippi River.

February 29 – March 16, 2020 (due to the pandemic, the installation closed early and was reimagined as a single-channel video available for online viewing through April 18, 2020)

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

Qollective was a group of seven multidisciplinary Houston-based q***r artists: Aveda Adara, Sebastian Gomez de la Torre, Frank Hernandez, Larry Johnson, Philip Karjeker, Hugo Perez, and Jesse Treviño. In conjunction with their exhibition, Tread Loudly, at Alabama Song, DiverseWorks supported I’m Ever So Pi**ed, their first collaborative performance that incorporated elements of contemporary dance, sound art, and drag.

Bayou City Be All was a one-of-a-kind evening of performance, fashion, and music beyond the gender binary. This community-driven project surveyed q***r and gender non-conforming traditions across Houston and featured artists: Black TM, Tania Breton, Junior Fernandez, iPOCA Collective, Jazmin Jett, Angel Lartigue, Isaac Reyes, and Y2K, selected through an open call with live beats by DJ HYPERFEMME and guest emcee B. AMES.

DiverseWorks’ new Art + Climate CONVERSATIONS highlights artists and creatives who are leading the way in addressing climate-related issues through their work.

Hear the inaugural speaker, nationally renowned choreographer and body-based artist EMILY JOHNSON, discuss her work as a land and water protector and organizer for justice, sovereignty, and well-being.

Of the Yu’pik Nation and based in Lenapehokin, Johnson is a recipient of a Bessie Award, the Doris Duke Artist Award, and Fellowships from Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, Forge Foundation, Braiding Seeds, United States Artists, and Guggenheim Foundation, among others.

UP Art Studio and the South Post Oak Redevelopment Authority (TIRZ 9) invite artists to a paid Open Call to transform the four concrete trailhead structures at Buffalo Speedway and Sims Bayou into a welcoming gateway to the regional trail network.

The selected artist or team receives a $14,000 all-inclusive commission; materials, surface prep, lift, traffic control, and clear coat are covered. Houston-area artists are especially encouraged.
