Media outlets notoriously post misleading information in order to get clicks and stir up rage. Always question everything you read, and consider how the title is leading you to believe something. They may not come out and say the bad thing is true but they purposefully twist words so that they have culpable deniability when it all hits the fan. CNN should be held to the highest account for how they worded their article on what is a very important issue. Here is why you should not pass along false information about the 62 million (or anything else):
1) When you pass along information that is false, the truth of what’s shared loses credence, as you put everything you say into question. Never lie in order to make a point. It only devalues everything else you say. There were really awful crimes committed against real people and we can’t let that get tossed to the wayside by a grossly exaggerated number. You do actual harm to people by sharing false information.
2) When you know it was less than a thousand dudes, it is still grotesque and evil, but it’s nothing that the government (or a group like Anonymous) couldn’t put together a team to find out who they are and take care of them in a permanent capacity. This can and should be squashed to prevent any further evils of the sort. That said, it is such a small percentage of the world’s population that there is no need for the average woman to fear any more than she might after watching a crime drama. It’s irrational, and should subside quickly.
3) When you lie and say that millions of men have done this, it gives women across the planet a valid reason to live in fear. No woman should be subjected to that sort of torment. Society itself will collapse if spouses can’t trust one another and think the other is actively seeking their harm. It also put a target on men’s backs as that large of a number would be a reasonable cause for a new civil war. It is harmful in ways I shudder to think about.
HOLD CNN ACCOUNTABLE.
