People have often described me as a β€œfree spirit,” a label that sometimes felt uncomfortable, (because I am also VERY responsible!!!!πŸ€“) Yet looking back, I see that having a space to create without judgment or expectations has been essential to my healing and well-being.
My art practice gives me that freedom. It is where I explore, play, and transform experience into new understandings. It is also where I process life’s challenges and the emotional impact of working as an Expressive Arts Therapist with clients facing depression, anxiety, trauma, and other significant mental health concerns. I care deeply about my clients and remain open to their emotional states mostly without feeling overwhelmed. But occasionally something feels particularly heavy, and then I turn to my own creative process which helps me metabolize, and transform those experiences into new understanding. To me that is why the expressive arts are so powerful. They offer 1. Freedom, 2. Connection, 3. Creativity (which is the POWER to make observable change) and 4. Fun. Those are four of the 5 basic needs that support psychological health!!

This painting was a journey! At first, I felt joy laying down the first layers of color. Then came a moment of questioning myself, following someone else’s suggestion, whether I should move in a different direction. I added circles and shapes trying to explore that, but soon I knew it was not what I wanted.
Instead of abandoning the painting, I began again. This time the colors came freely, diffused, and alive. And with that freedom, the joy returned.
The next day, I was invited into a meditation about β€œinner fire.” At first, I thought, β€œI have no fire left. I’m exhausted.” But during the process, I realized I do have fire, a very specific kind of fire. A fire for psychological safety. A fire for spaces where people are not controlled, corrected, or shaped into someone else’s vision, but instead are supported, understood, and appreciated for who they are. A fire for congruency, empathy, transparency, and unconditional positive regard. A fire for the kind of spaces where real self-expression and growth can happen. As I continued painting, this reclining figure appeared almost unexpectedly. She looked comfortable and at ease. I realized that I care about creating spaces of freedom and safety for others, but I also need to feel that comfort and freedom myself in order to create, teach, and express fully.
This painting became a reflection of that realization.
It had to be large, 60 x 60 inches.

Feeling inspired after attending a wonderful lunch with the Houston chapter of NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners). Listening to Councilwoman Alejandra Salinas speak about leadership, visibility, representation, and service deeply resonated with me as a Latina woman, artist, and expressive arts therapist.
Her presence as both a Latina and LGBTQ leader reminded me how important visibility truly is , not only for ourselves, but for the generations coming after us.
The experience also helped me reflect on the work I feel called to continue developing: bringing the healing power of the arts into mental health, personal growth, leadership, and team development spaces.
Over the years, I have witnessed the transformative impact of expressive arts in many settings, from working with high-acuity mental health clients navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief, to facilitating groups focused on connection, creativity, communication, and emotional well-being.
Again and again, I see that people benefit when they are given safe spaces to create, reflect, connect, and express themselves beyond words.
I am so glad to continue expanding this work through workshops, speaking, collaborations, and group experiences that support emotional wellness, creativity, resilience, and authentic human connection in both community and professional environments.
Thank you NAWBO Houston for creating spaces where women can gather, grow, and imagine new possibilities. πŸ˜ƒπŸŒΊ

This painting came to life in a moment when I felt completely exhausted. As I began, I kept thinking, I can’t do this today. I have no energy. And yet, something unexpected emerged.
The background appeared first, vibrant, and full of movement. It felt complete on its own, and I hesitated, not wanting to disturb it with a figure. But almost immediately, a figure found its way in. πŸ˜‚
As I continued painting, I experienced a sense of joy and my energy coming back, shaping the figure while also allowing it to be shaped by the background. It became a dialogue, a collaboration. It reminded me of how life unfolds: an ongoing interaction between who we are and the environments we inhabit.
There are no clear outlines here. Everything is fluid, blurred, and interwoven. It’s not always possible to distinguish where the person ends and the world begins, or where one influences the other and vice versa. And perhaps that’s the idea this piece holds.

This painting measures 60 x 36 inches and is available worldwide.

This morning I had the pleasure of facilitating the April Open Forum for the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) a beautiful global community that supports expressive arts practitioners around the world.

Each month on the 15th, IEATA members are invited to gather in these open forums to connect, reflect, and receive support in their personal and professional journeys.

It’s an honor to serve as a board member and to contribute to the Artists Committee within this inspiring organization.

This painting is an ex-voto retablo of gratitude, born from my experience in Alaska.
An ex-voto retablo is a form of devotional folk art in which a painting is offered in gratitude to the divine for a miracle or blessing received. Rooted in Catholic tradition, it expresses heartfelt thanks through image and story.
Each night, we were blessed with the presence of the aurora borealis. We also had the joy of riding with sled dogs, such beautiful, gentle, and noble beings. As an expressive person, I feel compelled to give form not only to pain, but also to what is transcendent, and sacred. This journey held all of that. To witness such beauty in the company of my family was an experience of awe. This piece is an offering of gratitude for the opportunity to be there, for the beauty of the Earth, for Alaska, and for the luminous sky above us. Thank you to the universe, the Earth 🌍 my family, my own eyes, the people and animals involved. Gracias Γ  la vida que me ha dado tanto!! πŸ˜ƒβ€οΈβ€οΈπŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸŒπŸŒπŸŒπŸŒπŸŒ

The painting is still in production but I will post it when it’s ready.)

It was an action packed vacation in Alaska, with several bucket list experiences checked off! Like feeding lichen and moss to the lovely reindeer, staying up all night watching the amazing stars filled sky and the northern lights, riding a snow machine, dog sledding and tasting delicious elk. The landscape is breathtaking, the silence feels sacred.
