In this workshop, we’ll paint digitally, using just a few layers & blend modes to create a painting that’s bursting with color! We’ll sketch from a reference and do most of the painting on a single layer. Then, we’ll add details & work with some basic blend modes. It’s helpful to have experience with drawing/painting, but different skill levels are welcome.

We’re halfway through our 7-week alla prima portrait journey, and this week was all about pushing limits.

challenged students to complete a full portrait in one sitting using only the Zorn palette (black, white, yellow ochre, and cad red). With just four colors, they explored how to capture lifelike skin tones, depth, and mood, while working quickly and decisively.

This exercise isn’t just about technique, it’s about trusting your instincts, embracing bold brushstrokes, and discovering how much can be expressed with simplicity. The results? Powerful portraits filled with energy and personality.

Kick off Peter Broz 7-week Alla Prima Portrait Course at East End Maker Hub, Houston’s creative hotspot for makers and innovators.

Week 1 starts with the Zorn palette (white, black, yellow ochre, cad red), just four colors that unlock endless hues and lifelike skin tones. Bold, efficient, solvent-free.

Peter, a Houston-born artist and resident of Box13 ArtSpace, has 7+ years of teaching experience and is represented by Catapult Gallery. His work explores the instinctual connection between humans and nature through figurative and biological elements.

Speaker Alert: Meet Shon Tillman has spent the last 10 years in digital marketing and nearly 8 years as a business partner — which means he’s had plenty of time to rack up some epic fails along the way.

His biggest lessons? They didn’t come from perfect campaigns or smooth client pitches. They came from being in the room — and sometimes completely bombing it.

Like the time he got kicked out of his BNI networking chapter for a presentation gone sideways. Or the meeting where the wrong client walked in (awkward). Or the cringe-worthy websites that somehow still made it out into the world with his name attached.
