I love how this illustration shows what retopolgy is. Basically, 3D scans come into the computer in points and triangles. Our programs need quads otherwise you get some crazy artifacts. What is an artifact? Check out this you tube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_S1INdEmdI

Just before writing my first book on 3D Technology in fine art and craft retopologizing had to be done by hand. UGGGG. So glad our programs do it for us.
