Happy Juneteenth Y’all

Jason’s Lyric splashed onto the silver screen in 1994 and we were all excited to skip our afternoon classes, leave campus, and head directly to the theater to immerse ourselves into this story of two beautiful people struggling to be in love and survive their surroundings Allen Payne Jada Pinkett Smith . Doug McHenry ‘s film, set in Houston, TX also in many ways is a film about breaking chains that space, place, and family bound us in.

So, why on this are we posting about this film? Well, if you didn’t grow up in Texas, or the SE part of Texas, your state’s Department of Education may have omitted the history of how the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the shores of Galveston, TX thereby freeing the enslaved inhabitants of the Lone Star state.

For our observant group of college students from the same state in 1994, , not only entertained, it also educated us. At our movie recap lunch a few hours later we were all asking each other, “what is Juneteenth?” With only pagers on our hips🤪🫣, the immediate gratification of an answer would have to wait🤨. But, we didn’t wait too long. Going into the theater, we didn’t know a few minutes of a film would spark a history lesson.

As s we entertain, but we also teach because we imbue our work with personal, regional, cultural, fantastical, and lived experiences, even when those tasked with caring for our education do not.

Pick a film and go have yourself a being entertained AND educated‼️
