The Puerto Rican Bomba drum culture is one of the island’s oldest and most powerful musical traditions, born in the 17th century among enslaved Africans on coastal sugar plantations. Centered around the barril drums, Bomba is a dynamic conversation between dancer and drummer — the lead drummer follows the dancer’s movements, creating an improvised rhythmic dialogue that blends resistance, celebration, and community storytelling. Rooted in African heritage and shaped in Puerto Rico’s towns like Loíza, Ponce, and Mayagüez, Bomba remains a living cultural expression of identity, resilience, and joy.

Asalato (also spelled asalatu, kasalato) and Kashaka (also called koshkah) are traditional West African percussion instruments.

They come primarily from Ghana, particularly associated with the Ga people around the coastal Accra region.

More broadly, they are part of the rhythmic culture of West Africa, where hand percussion and interlocking rhythm patterns are central to music and dance traditions.

Two small gourds (or balls) filled with beads connected by a string. They are played by swinging and snapping them together and create multiple sounds at once (click, shaker, slap)
