Happy Juneteenth! I’m sad to miss the celebrations this year on Galveston Island!
Did you know that horses played an important part in celebrating freedom from the very first Juneteenth in 1865? A tradition of celeratory carriage rides ensued, with both horses and carriages being covered in flowers. All the pictures I could find online were black and white, but I took some poetic license and painted the flowers red as that is the color of Juneteenth.

Have you heard the story of the two horses that survived the Great Storm of 1900, the biggest natural disaster to befall the United States, by going upstairs in a Galveston mansion? Rumor has it, the horses never came back down and lived out their lives upstairs. If you visit the mansion, you can sometimes still hear hoof beats.
This local legend makes a repeated and significant cameo in Storms of Malhado, a historical novel with paranormal elements set on Galveston Island.

Inspired by O’Malley the Galveston carriage horse and his beautiful blonde mane, also by the Hermès horse scarf I saw in a shop at CDG but refused to buy because I make my own horses.

A really special painting, one of my favorite seascapes, included in the 50 Artists Houston book by and Dana McWhorter, went home with one of my favorite collectors today! And a special lagniappe, I enjoyed a visit from the collector’s adorable dog in my Galveston Island studio!
