"Hew Locke: Passages” is now open. Take a look at the MFAH preparations team installing a key work in the exhibition: "The Survivor."

Hew Locke reinvents the signs and symbols that define public spaces—from statues to coats of arms, royal insignia, official portraits, monuments, and imperial architecture. He uses photography, drawing, sculpture, and assemblages to explore the histories of colonialism across five continents—filtered through present-day realities of global trade, migration, and diaspora.

On view today through September 13.

Brittany Webb, Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, leads a powerful opening lecture for "Hew Locke: Passages."

Through sculpture, collage, and assemblage, Hew Locke reimagines the symbols that shape public space, statues, monuments, and royal insignia, unpacking layered histories of colonialism across five continents and connecting them to today’s realities of migration, trade, and diaspora.

The most comprehensive survey of his work to date, "Passages" spans three decades of bold, thought-provoking practice. 🌍✨
