HueMan:Shelter

A first look at Hues of Home.

Last month, the HueMan community gathered for a private teaser screening and panel discussion for Hues of Home, the documentary created by Zainob + Mathew Create.

It was moving and inspiring to see the stories, artists, cohort members, and public art behind the HueMan:Shelter Project reflected on screen. The teaser offered an early glimpse into the heart of the project and the people who helped bring it to life.

Thank you to Mat and Zainob for documenting this work with care, and to every artist, CRR UpRise cohort member, partner, and community member who shaped this project from the beginning.

We’re honored to have experienced this early glimpse and look forward to seeing the final film when it is ready to be shared more widely.

A look back at HueMan:Shelter in Bagby Park.

Last November, the iconic Midtown letters became part of the project, wrapped in color, story, and meaning shaped by Houston artists.

For a moment, a familiar landmark invited people to look again.

That’s the power of public art in shared space.

Friday reminder: art can live in the places we pass every day.

Underpasses. Bus stops. Busy corridors. Corners we know by habit.

HueMan:Shelter brings public art into these everyday spaces across Midtown, inviting people to slow down, look closer, and experience the city differently.

This weekend, take a walk through the installations and see what you notice.

Explore the route using the interactive map at the link in bio.

Start with one detail.
A line of handwriting.
A symbol tucked into the color.
A phrase that feels simple until you sit with it.

Each HueMan:Shelter installation holds layers of story, collaboration, and lived experience. The work was created to be seen from the street, but it also rewards a closer look.

Sometimes the whole piece begins with what catches your eye first.

What does it mean for public art to shape the feeling of a neighborhood?

Since launching across Midtown, HueMan:Shelter has invited residents and visitors alike to experience public space differently through storytelling, lived experience, and community collaboration.

According to survey responses, 88% of participants said the installations have enlivened Midtown.

Public art can change how a place feels.
How people gather.
What conversations become possible there.

Blink and you miss it.

A stop. A seat. A moment between where you were and where you’re going.

But look again.

Stand By Me by Chris Robinson turns this everyday space into something louder, more human. A reflection of ambition, resilience, and the kind of stories that don’t always get centered, but are always present.

Part of the HueMan:Shelter Public Art Project, these installations live along real routes, in real time, asking you to notice what’s been here all along.
