While working toward an art show in Houston next year, I decided to change the tune a bit and go for something more Atomic. It’s far from finished, but I expect folks will be able to tell it’s an AtomiTiki work. More to come!

I know! It’s been forever since I have posted. I finally set up a new workshop in Houston! My latest order is finished!

Todd Arnold, Artist
Polynesiacs Artist Interview No. 9
Orlando, Florida

“When I look at atomic shapes in mid-century or fundamental atomic design, it boils down to circles, squares, and lines. I see the similarities between the shapes on tapa cloth and other Polynesian art, and how these relate to atomic design and Tiki.

I see primitive figures, reminiscent of human forms, eyes, or faces. You know, we have the ability to see images in clouds, eyes in shadows on rocks, faces or in the ground. These primitive figures are what inspire me to use wood and glass to create art.”

Growing up in the seventies, artist Todd Arnold developed a love for Mid-century modern and Atomic art, even though it was declining in popularity at the time. Recalling unique sculptural wall hangings constructed with various materials such as wood, textiles, resin, and gravel elements, he appreciated the similarities shared by Atomic designs and Polynesian motifs reflected in the geometric, yet organic elements of Tiki.

With the resurgence of Mid-century modern and Tiki culture, Todd is inspired to create artwork that blends Mid-century modern, Atomic, and Tiki elements, drawing from Polynesian and Atomic designs without direct reproduction. His artistic journey is a mix of personal creativity, historical inspiration, and love for nostalgia to create unique artworks that reflect a Tiki-inspired, Mid-century modern look with the goal of having a viewer ask, “Is it new or vintage?”

You can find Todd’s work at AtomiTiki.com or Atomitiki Retro Creations on Facebook.
