Congratulations to the Let Creativity Happen and City’s Initiative Round 1 2026 grantees!

The City of Houston Mayor’s Office of the Arts (MOA) awarded $223,185 through two competitive grant programs to support 61 artists and nonprofit organizations whose projects will bring arts and cultural experiences to communities across Houston. Administered by Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) on behalf of the Mayor’s Office of the Arts, the grants are funded through a portion of the City’s Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), meaning every paid stay in a Houston hotel or eligible short-term rental helps generate funding to support the arts.

After Hurricane Harvey, Houston Arts Alliance launched the Ready and Resilient program to strengthen Houston’s arts and cultural community before another disaster.

That work continued as HAA partnered with area arts organizations to create an emergency fund during the COVID-19 pandemic and reactivated it following the arson attack at Winter Street Studios.

In 2023, the City of Houston and HAA introduced the Creative Impact Boost Formula within HAA’s grant programs, providing additional funding to artists and organizations from historically underrepresented communities.

In 2006, four entities with distinct responsibilities for arts funding, cultural advising, and civic art came together to create Houston Arts Alliance.

Over the following decade, HAA welcomed its first CEO, partnered in publishing The Creative Economy of Houston, and adapted its work following the City’s Cultural Arts Plan for Houston.

These milestones marked the beginning of the organization we celebrate today.

During the 1990s, the City of Houston strengthened the foundation for its Civic Art Collection and annual civic art program.

The decade brought the creation of dedicated conservation and advisory bodies and the Civic Art Ordinance, which established ongoing investment in art through eligible public improvement projects.

Together, these milestones formalized how the city acquires, conserves, and develops its Civic Art Collection.
