Starting my Early American Flag cross-stitch just in time for the 4th — thirteen stars in that circle of blue, red and cream thread already twisted up and ready to go. There’s something grounding about counting stitches while you think about how much history sits in this one small pattern.

The design traces back to Betsy Ross, the Philadelphia seamstress credited with sewing the first American flag in 1776. As the story goes, George Washington and two other members of the Continental Congress brought her a rough sketch, and Ross suggested the five-pointed star — cut with a single fold and one snip of the scissors — instead of the six-pointed one they’d drawn. Historians still debate how much of the legend is fact versus 19th-century myth-making, but the Betsy Ross flag, with its circle of thirteen stars, has stayed the enduring symbol of that first flag ever since.

250 years later, still stitching it by hand. Here’s to the ones who came before us with a needle in hand.

I’m crushed 😭

I got in line to get tickets to see the this morning - only 83000 people in front of me.

Checked back throughout the day and marveled at how quickly the queue was moving.

Got below 1000 and I started getting really excited - and then it paused and remained paused. I was less than 500 people away!!!!

Fortunately this batch of tickets were for Sept-Dec and I was planning to go in either Dec or Jan. So I have another chance when they release the second wave of tickets!!

That said - the management of the queue by was awesome. AND my feet don’t hurt 🤣

To celebrate, Fiber Arts Houston Studio just received a beautiful shipment of tartan straight from Scotland — and I could not be more excited.

Four gorgeous tartans are now in the studio:
✦ MacKay OC
✦ Angus Modern
✦ Spirit of Scotland
— all from

✦ County Cork
— from

(Fair warning: photographing tartan is genuinely tricky, and I haven’t quite mastered it yet - I’m looking 👀 at you MacKay OC!! Trust me when I say these are so much more beautiful in person.)

And here’s the exciting part — these aren’t just for display. Fiber Arts Houston Studio is building a bespoke kilt tailoring service, and these are our very first fabrics. 🪡

Have you ever wanted a tailored kilt made just for you? Watch this space. 👀

The best therapy for a stressful day? Picking colors for your next embroidery project.

Almost better than the real thing. ALMOST!

My actual therapist would like me to clarify that it is not, in fact, better than therapy. But it’s cheaper per hour and nobody asks me about my mother. 🧵✨

Drop a 🧵 Is picking colors the BEST 😊 or the WORST ☹️. Watch this space to see how these colors come to life on the fabric.
