Moody Gallery Houston gallery whose focus is contemporary American art with an emphasis on work by Texas artists.

Betty Moody opened Moody Gallery in 1975 and exhibits work by contemporary American artists. The emphasis has always been on artists living and working in Texas, as well as artists who have had a strong connection to Texas. The gallery is interested in a wide range of artistic ideas and in showing all media. Many of the artists represented are recognized on a national (and in some cases, internati

onal level); however, the gallery also represents mid-career and emerging artists. The gallery is committed to showing the best work possible from this region and putting the work in context with work by established artists from other parts of the country.

“What I had,” an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Dan Sutherland, opened at Moody Gallery on May 9, 2026. In addition to demonstrating his masterful technical abilities as a painter and ingenuity as a maker of drawings, the twenty-three works on view in this exhibition reflect Sutherland’s deep interest in and knowledge of art history. Sutherland references and melds art historical influences and sources from across centuries, from Jean Siméon Chardin to Alexander Calder and beyond, in an inventive and original manner. At times, particularly in his drawings, Sutherland explicitly appropriates motifs, tropes, and symbols from throughout the history of art. At other times, he more obliquely reveals his sources of inspiration through technique and approach. The results of Sutherlands efforts, a “game” of sorts according to the artist, constitute an unorthodox style that resists norms and simplistic, definitive categorization."

Ucross Foundation Residency alumni Sarah Williams is included in the exhibition "In Company" at the Ucross Foundation's Art Gallery in Ucross, Wyoming, on view through December 19, 2026. Curated by the Ucross Art Gallery team, "In Company" gathers 14 artists in a constellation of influence, exchange, and kinship. Seven former artists-in-residence were invited to showcase their work alongside an artist who has impacted their creative process. By highlighting relationships that inform artistic practice and making visible the subtle influences that link makers and their creative work, these artist pairings encourage viewers to consider how meaning is shaped both individually and collaboratively.

Of her work, Sarah states "I approach my paintings as a way to honor my own regional history, which I will always tie to my upbringing in North Missouri. I now realize that while these paintings started as a way to deal with the homesickness I felt after leaving my childhood hometown to pursue an MFA degree in an urban setting, it has become a way of creating some strange kind of souvenir of the places I left and the structures and things I knew most intimately. Even though I eventually took a job back in my home region, I've come to understand that in many ways, I'll never be home again."

We are delighted Gallery Artists Dornith Doherty and Mary McCleary are featured in Glasstire's recent article "Picturing Texas Art: Training Grounds". As Glasstire celebrates their 25th Anniversary, they are commemorating the artists and art professionals who have shaped their regional art scenes, as well as Texas art more broadly.

Born in Houston, Dornith Doherty has been a photography professor at the University of North Texas in Denton since 1996. For 30 years, she has taught and inspired photographers and lens-based artists, while also maintaining her own successful career and advancing the field of photography. Recently, she received the UNT Foundation’s Eminent Faculty Award in recognition of her longstanding career.

Mary McCleary, known for her intricately layered three-dimensional collage works, was named Regent’s Professor of Art Emeritus at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. The title recognizes her significant contributions to the university, where she taught from 1975 to 2005. Emily Sloan, Matthew Sontheimer, and O. Rufus Lovett were among the many students that she mentored and helped shape.

Moody Gallery is proud to present Prints by James Drake and Melissa Miller, a two person exhibition presented in partnership with PrintHouston. Featuring a selection of prints by gallery artists James Drake and Melissa Miller, the exhibition will be on view May 30 - July 11, 2026.

James Drake (b. Lubbock, Texas, 1946) currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Master of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, California. Drake is the recipient of numerous awards, which include a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Grants, and a Nancy Graves Award for Visual Arts. In 2007 his work was featured at the 52nd International Venice Biennale and in 2000 his work was featured in the Whitney Biennial. His exhibition at Moody Gallery in 2004 received a U.S. Art Critics Association (AICA) Award for Best in Show in a Commercial Gallery Nationally, 2nd Place. Drake’s work can be seen in many permanent collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Blanton Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, San Antonio Museum of Art, Art Museum of South Texas, El Paso Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Mexico Museum of Art, Lannan Foundation, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (La Jolla), Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Four books have been published on James Drake: James Drake (University of Texas Press, 2008); James Drake: Red Drawings & White Cut-Outs (Radius Books, 2012); and James Drake: 1242 (Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (La Jolla), 2014); James Drake: Tongue-Cut Sparrows (Radius Books, 2024).

Melissa Miller (b. Houston, Texas, 1951) currently resides and works in Austin, Texas. She received her Bachelor's of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico, New Mexico. Miller has received numerous honors including three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and an award from the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation. She was selected “Texas State Visual Artist of the Year” by the Texas Legislature and has also received awards from the Dallas Museum of Art, the Art League of Houston, the Dallas Visual Arts Association, and the National Council of Arts Administrators. She has exhibited work at major museums in America and was the first native-Texan female artist to be included in the prestigious Venice Biennial, Whitney Biennial, and Corcoran Biennial. Her work has been collected by prominent museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
