Desert Island Discs

Desert Island Discs Guests select the 8 songs they'd take with them if they were to be castaway alone on a desert island. The host and producer is Jeff Wax.

Hosted and produced by Jeff Wax every Friday from 1:00-3:00 PM CST on KPFT HD-3 Radio in Houston, Texas - 90.1 FM; live stream at www.kpft.org "Desert Island Discs" is a long-form interview program heard on KPFT Radio (90.1 FM) in Houston, Texas. Each week people from all aspects of life are asked the question, if you were to be cast away alone on a desert island, which eight songs would you choos

e to have with you, assuming of course, that you had a listening device and an inexhaustible power source. We hear excerpts from each of the castaways selections, - discussion of their choices permits a review of their life and listeners have the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting members of the community "up close and personal". The beauty of Desert Island Discs is that the format lends itself perfectly for our guest to relax, forget the sound-bites, and reminisce about stories from their life. For an audience used to the rough and tumble of news interviews or television chat-shows, Desert Island Discs is a breath of fresh air.

On Sunday, October 10th, I will be back on WMPG FM, hosting another edition of Rock Lobstah from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. EST. I hope you'll catch the broadcast on 90.9 FM if you're in the Portland, Maine, area. If not, the show will livestream at www.wmpg.org/listen

The show format is cover songs. Why covers? Because great covers work. There’s no formula to making a successful cover song. But the best covers answer two essential questions: why this song and why this performance? When they're successful, a good cover manages to comment on the original song—its brilliance, mood, even shortcomings—while also highlighting the new performer's own voice and creative interpretation.

What do people listen for in cover songs? According to Petr Janata, a psychologist at UC Davis, "We want familiarity and the ability to form expectations. With so much unknown in the world, cover songs are the macaroni and cheese of music: creamy, gooey, fat-filled, loaded with dairy and carbs (cue oxytocin production in the brain). We make the leap to connect comfort and familiarity. Wanting to hear cover songs is like wanting mac and cheese.

"Sad County Songs to Listen to When You Are Blue"

When: Sunday, July 21st, from 10 to 11:30am ET
Where: WMPG FM - 90.9 FM

Please join me this Sunday morning as I return to the WMPG air and host “Rock Lobstah” from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. EST. The show features a mix of "Sad County Songs to Listen to When You Are Blue." sung by female country artists. We all have those days when we need a little comfort when a good long cry can be the best remedy. With its acoustic guitar and heart-wrenching lyrics, country music has a unique way of providing that comfort. Sunday's playlist features gut-wrenching breakup stories from some of the best contemporary artists like Carly Pearce, Kacey Musgraves. Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Jana Cramer, Abby Anderson, and Ashley Cooke, whose story-like lyrics and slow, twangy instrumentals will tug at your heartstrings. If you’re feeling particularly fed up today, don’t worry. You won’t be alone in feeling blue. We all have off days, those when it feels like a little black cloud is following us everywhere we go, making everything gloomy and miserable.

Life isn’t always blue skies and puppy dogs; sometimes, it’s hard work just getting through the day.

But if we were happy all the time, we wouldn’t need sad songs, and sad songs are some of the greatest songs in the world, especially country music.

Sometimes, the best thing to do is wallow in all that misery and make a day of it; sit under that rain cloud and enjoy being soaked. It’s like Dolly Parton always says: “If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

So won't you join me this evening on WMPG FM 90.9 FM from 8:30pm to 10:00 pm ET for 90 minutes of gut-wrenching sad country songs that are guaranteed to break your heart.

If you are outside the Greater Portland listening area catch the live stream at www.wmpg.org/listen
