JERK OR JUSTIFIED: This started about 5 months ago. My elderly neighbor lives alone and has trouble getting around sometimes, so I started offering to grab her stuff whenever I do my own grocery run. Purely out of goodwill, I even spotted her some cash to cover her when she was short or forgot cash. It worked fine, no complaints.

Last month two different people from my street knocked on my door separately asking if I could do the same thing for them. Turns out my neighbor had been telling people around the building that I'm basically "her helper" and pointed them my way without ever asking me first. I told them both I only do it for her and that its a personal thing, not a service. They were a bit cold about it but I figured it was done. Then she calls me saying I was rude to her friends and that if I really wanted to help people I wouldn't pick and choose who deserves it. I told her I care about her but she had no right to offer my time to others without even a heads up. Now shes barely speaking to me and apparently my other neighbors are gossiping that I think I’m too good to help them.

Am I a jerk for telling them no and also setting my boundaries with her? Or justified because I can’t help everyone?
