Hey y'all!

My husband and I were out on a date at a restaurant that had live music. It wasn't too loud, we were enjoying it, and the singer would tell stories between songs that we could only half hear from our table.

Our entrees came out, so we're eating and talking when suddenly everyone around us starts standing up.

Before we even realize what's happening, the singer launches into the NATIONAL ANTHEM.

Just randomly. In the middle of his set. In the middle of dinner.

We stayed seated and finished eating.

Afterward, a guy from the table next to us actually came over and said, "Next time, you should stand for the anthem and show a little respect."

Excuse me?!

I have plenty of respect for the national anthem, but who expects the Star-Spangled Banner to break out between appetizers and dessert? By the time we realized what was happening, we were already sitting there with forks in our hands, food in our mouths.

Now I'm wondering if maybe we should've gotten up once we figured it out.

Were we jerks for staying seated during the national anthem?

Or justified because nobody expects a surprise anthem in the middle of dinner?

JERK OR JUSTIFIED: My best friend asked me to be in his wedding.

He recently texted all the groomsmen saying we'd each need to foot the bill for matching suits, bachelor party expenses, and gifts. What? Oh, and the wedding is in Michigan. MICHIGAN. I Can’t afford that.

I told him I couldn't justify spending that much and offered to attend as a guest instead. He said if I wasn't willing to "show up for him," then maybe I shouldn't come to the wedding at all.

So... I RSVP'd no.

Now our friends say I ended a 20-year friendship over money.

Am I a jerk for skipping the wedding? Or justified because being someone's friend shouldn't come with a thousand-dollar price tag?
