Corinne Loperfido creates works of art made up entirely of items that most people would just throw away. โWith each new piece of "trash" we find, the goal is to give new life to the objects through art while simultaneously inviting people to rethink their participation in the continuation of overconsumption and the subsequent destruction of our Earth.โ
Loperfido has already created the installation Trash Temple at House of Eternal Return and two pieces for Radio Tave: What Have We Done and Heaven is Earth.
Heaven is Earth calls on us to examine our role in the exploitation of our Earth. Blue plastic "trash": Bottle caps, laundry detergent tops, toothbrushes, toy sharks, and fish represent a waterfall. A sign reads โHeaven Is Earthโ on one side, and the other says โCompost the System.โ That view highlights our consumer detritus, as the โwaterfallโ is composed of cell phones, calculators, and toy cars. The viewer feels the duality in what a gift we have on our beautiful earth versus how poorly we are treating her. There is no "other" place that we "go to after we dieโ - heaven IS Earth.
What Have We Done confronts the viewer with the plastic waste that surrounds us. Pink and red broken pieces, shoes, single-use packaging, hair combs, toys, watches, water bottles, cups, straws, and hundreds of discarded items swirl around a mirror with the words "What Have We Done" in the center. A border made of old television remotes points to the manipulation of the advertising industry and the millions of tons of โtrashโ that end up in landfills every day due to our excessive consumption.
Keep an eye out for Loperfidoโs upcoming piece for Meow Wolf LA, and take some time to find ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle in your life!
