Just completed a Zorn Palette Alla Prima Portraiture class at taught by !

This was my favorite art class that I've taken in the past couple of years! I really got to practice drawing/ painting from life and it is definitely challenging, but still lots of fun !!

Thank you for an awesome learning experience 😄😄

Some older oil paintings from 2021~
Today, I was reflecting on how life can change so quickly, and how these changes can influence an artist's style

I was looking for novelty, vibrancy, and new techniques to cope with the pandemic. The viewer would be able to tell by the highly saturated colors and contrast.
It's crazy to think about now, but these pieces were a time stamp for what was going on in my head

Visiting museums and churches after taking a portrait painting class is similar to getting a new prescription for glasses when the prescription you currently have no longer works. It's so refreshing to study these paintings from a fresh perspective.

I analyze the soft and hard edges in each painting because this helps me understand the focal point. I'm slowly realizing how painters use their skills to emphasize and depict what they want you to see on their canvas in a way that is similar to how a director will create a scene for a movie in a methodical fashion.

These pieces of art were created by William Bouguereau and Kehinde Wiley. The church mural was painted by unnamed artist (Still trying to figure out who)

All three have distinctive styles and a story to tell. Whether it's about poverty, racial injustice, or spirituality, they leave the viewer with contemplation about these complex topics.

This is another “blocking in” approach for portrait drawing that I’m trying out right now.

Blocking in seems to be the most successful technique for freehand portrait drawing. At first it felt awkward to just draw shapes all over this person’s face (to represent different planes and colors) but this technique allows me to look at the portrait in a more objective way, by drawing what I actually see, not what I think I’m seeing. The shadows on her face are broken up into so many different areas. I even flipped the drawing upside down so I could view it more objectively.

I visited the Met for the first time in 2019 and I could honestly spend 5 days in that museum and not get bored!

"It takes ten thousand hours to truly master anything. Time spent leads to experience; experience leads to proficiency; and the more proficient you are the more valuable you'll be." - Malcolm Gladwell

I've been researching successful artists and who they look to for inspiration, and in my search, I found this particular quote. I re-assessed just how much I was investing into myself. Do my actions match my words?
A quote from Ed Mylett's podcast also ricocheted in my head, which states: "How HUNGRY are you for your goals?"

Since I'm a huge numbers girl, I decided to track myself during the month of January to see how much progress I was making. 85 hours in the month of January alone, developing skills for portrait oil painting, one of the most daunting types of art. This is the most time I've spent creating art in a short period of time. Sometimes you don't really need to be ready to get started. You just need to feed the hunger.
