Perhaps the most famous of karate photos is this one. It is usually used to represent the 1936 Roundtable Discussions that occurred on October 25th 1936 however the photo was actually not taken until 1937 at a meeting to commemorate the establishment of standardized karate kata. In the front row left to right is Chotoku Kyan, Kentsu Yabu, Chomo Hanashiro, and Chojun Miyagi. In the rear is Shimpan Shiroma, Chotoku Maeshiro, Choshin Chibana, and Genwa Nakasone. The 1936 meeting was sponsored by the Ryukyu Shinpo Newspaper and is noted today for the outcome which lead to the change in the kanji of how karate would be written moving forward. The change from 唐手 literally meaning Tang Dynasty hand to 空手 meaning Empty hand. In 2005 the Okinawa Prefecture Assembly commemorated October 25th as Karate No Hi or day of karate.
