Voter Turnout equals representation and is directly linked to who makes the rules about voting. Equally importantly, your vote impacts decisions about the threshold to break ties in the state legislature. So let's talk Texas:
According to the Texas Tribune "Texas has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the country, turning out 45.6% of its population of eligible voters in 2018, compared with a national average of 49.4%". Why is voter turnout so low? The laws surrounding access to voting have become more restrictive over time, with Texas occupying the bottom five states in the cost of voting index. (sources below).
The people who make the rules surrounding voting are the state senators and elected officials on the ballot in Texas this November!
Texas is demographically young and diverse, yet policies here remain overwhelmingly conservative? Because the Lt. Governor, who is the sitting head of the State Senate when in session, can change the thresholds for ties. Dan Patrick, our current Lt. Governor, has already done just that in 2015 and he continues to push to lower the threshold further to favor one party. In 2015, Texans voted to add Democratic seats in the Senate, and Patrick changed rules so the Republican Party could continue to push their legislative agenda without compromise, or deference to the wishes of voters. This is not a partisan issue but an issue of democracy.
One of the easiest ways to improve voter turnout is to make a voting plan. Share voteintx.org with friends and family to spread the word and encourage them to make a voting plan too. Your vote matters!
