While writing a monograph on historical theories of memory, Béatrice (Anne Laure Sellier), a respected academic, becomes beguiled by the allegedly true story of the Chronovisor, an occult device said to reproduce visuals from any point in history on a TV screen. Her obsession with the mysterious machine drags her from her Upper East Side apartment through the depths of New York City’s hidden libraries to the edge of a breakthrough.

With an 80-minute block of stellar short films, they visit rodeos, county fairs, historic theaters, and unconventional venues to make sure our state’s film community is as big and broad as Texas.

International superstar Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love) embodies tragic screen siren Ruan Lingyu, known as the "Greta Garbo of China," in this unconventional biopic by Hong Kong New Wave master Stanley Kwan (Rouge). Praised for her moving and emotive onscreen presence, Ruan’s private life, which was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids, began to mirror the melodramas which brought her fame, culminating in her su***de at age 24. Kwan and Cheung paint a kaleidoscopic yet intimate portrait of the ill-fated actress, deftly blending lush period drama, archival footage, and metatextual documentary sequences of Cheung reflecting on Ruan’s legacy. The result is, much like the films of Ruan Lingyu themselves, “tender, vivid and almost overwhelmingly moving” (Time Out).

Presented by Fortune Star Media Limited, the restoration of the film was carried out from the original 35mm picture and optical soundtrack negative. The prints were repaired, cleaned and scanned in Hong Kong, then digitally restored in 4K resolution in Bologna, Italy by L'Immagine Ritrovata. Endorsed by the director, Stanley Kwan, the color correction was completed by Interface Video Production Ltd in Hong Kong.

Foltz Fine Art is pleased to present a special screening of THE RIVER AND THE WALL, the acclaimed documentary by filmmaker Ben Masters, at the River Oaks Theatre on October 10th. Proceeds from the event will go to No Big Bend Wall, an organization focused on public education, transparency in federal decision-making, cultural and environmental resource protection, landowner rights, and due process in response to the proposed wall in Big Bend.

THE RIVER AND THE WALL follows a journey along the Texas–Mexico border; the film explores the extraordinary landscape, wildlife, and communities of the region while considering the environmental impact of a border wall. Join us for an evening centered on Texas, conservation, and the enduring importance of protecting its wild places.
