It’s the morning after and - we gotta say - cheers to the artists in RESIGHT!
They DID IT, y’all!
They hauled their artwork across the country and fully embraced the spirit of the HUSTLE in our city. Props to this group of creatives for their D-I-Y attitude and for being all in for an experience in our super non-traditional venue.
If you catch any of these lovely folks out and about this weekend, welcome them and thank them for the H-town love!
Super duper special thanks to Tere Garcia for spearheading the RESIGHT effort and for being such a wonderful catalyst for bringing communities together.
Job well done, Parsons friends!

El Rincón Social (The Social Corner) works through and expands from local means. According to exhibitions coordinator Juan Alonzo, the spirit of El Rincón Social lies in the collaborative nature of a self-sustaining community that is “earned and built, not bought. Each who arrives here has something to show and teach, and likewise will find something to see and learn,” he says. “The challenge of collective and collaborative endeavors is in the balance of independent thought and universal engagement — in the task of sustaining a creative ecosystem that allows for personal growth while simultaneously maintaining a mindful objective to have a proactive relationship with our community.”

EL RINCON SOCIAL's Open Studios Resident Artist: Matthew Sullivan, of Houston, received a BFA from Tufts University and The School for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He is a qualified photographer, printmaker and framer. His artistic expression has generally been centered around drawing and currently he is exploring creating digital art while running a custom framing business. Connecting his artistic expression to an audience in a way that supports him; thereby completing the expressive process, has been central to Matthew's artistic practice. In this way, custom framing is an essential element to his work. Matthew has been selling his own self-framed works on paper and has created hundreds of hand crafted custom frames for other artists and clients for over 15 years.
EL RINCON SOCIAL's Open Studios Resident Artist: Dylan DeBock Conner, born in Houston, received his BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD and studied Art History at the University of Houston. Conner explores material, form, and process directly in the new works to debut in this exhibition. Concrete, steel, and plaster are the foundations of Conner’s most recent body of work. He investigates the dualities of liquid and solid, rigid and fluid, movement and rest. His latest series employs unique casting techniques, honed and developed through years of experimentation. Materials used are found, fabricated, manipulated and molded in these works that respond to the exhibition space. Controlled fabrication is complemented with an allowance for the materials to behave according to their physical properties.
EL RINCON SOCIAL's Open Studios Resident Artist: Maureen Penders is a Salvadoran artist. She moved to Houston TX in 2009 to attend the University of Houston where she received her BFA in Photography and Digital Media. Penders currently works as a Teaching Artists for FotoFest’s Education department; Literacy Through Photography. This program focuses on subjects of Self, Family, and Community. Using photography as a tool for self expression and teaching visual literacy.
In her personal work Penders is interested in conversations which touch upon different social aspects which are relevant to her life and experiences. Predominantly the systemic socio-economic inequality in El Salvador, projects exploring the LGBTQ experience in their culture, as well as studies of her own Salvadoran culture. Her practice is mainly concentrated on the traditional photographic process.
EL RINCON SOCIAL's Open Studios Resident Artist: Darwin Arevalo received his BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute. The result of his artistic experimentation is rooted in processes that exploit the unpredictable intersections of materiality and form, as each of his artworks is in the first place, a reaction to itself.
