“There is understandable fear among artists that artificial intelligence will plunder their work and render already-difficult careers impossible. This sets up the question: Is there an ethical path forward for art and AI?
Perhaps my brain was addled by all the Texas sunshine, but a recent trip to the exhibition ‘Imaging after Photography’ at Rice University in Houston has me convinced that the answer is yes — artificial intelligence can be a force for real, exciting innovation in art when it is wielded by artists who engage with it critically.“
—Julia Curl, Hyperallergic

Answer the question for yourself. “Imaging after Photography” is on view from 10 am - 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, through May 9.

Tuesday, April 21, at 6 pm join the Moody for a book launch and film screening to celebrate the release of “Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Border Tuner | Sintonizador Fronterizo.” Together, the book and 48-minute film document Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s participatory art installation that created a platform for people to converge along the US-Mexico border and speak to one another across the divide.

Edited by Michael Nardone and Edgar Picazo Merino, and published by Inventory Press, the book includes texts in both English and Spanish that critically examine the legacy of Border Tuner within the wider frame of artistic production along the U.S.-Mexico border.

This event will include comments from Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (artist), Kerry Doyle (curator), Edgar Picazo Merino (curator), and Michael Nardone (writer). Books will be available on site from Basket Books.

Saturday April 18, they will be playing work informed by ideas found in Imaging after Photography. Join us from 3-4 pm for the performance followed by a reception.

Celebrated as “an excellent exploration into our new world of images generated through the use of artificial intelligence,” by Glasstire and noted by .art for “provid[ing] a space for a more nuanced and necessary inquiry,” Imaging after Photography is an exhibition for AI enthusiasts and skeptics alike, inviting everyone to consider how artists are navigating the technology’s impact on the medium of photography.
