A golden lion with unnervingly human eyes holds the center of this work, its mane dissolving into planes of ochre and amber. Blue irises fix on an unseen point, equal parts curiosity and sorrow, and a smaller pale creature, part bear and part child, leans in with a tentative, intimate feel. Two larger, ghostlike figures rise behind them in cool blues against a deep red ground, their uplifted arms reading like ritual or rehearsal and quietly unsettling the scene. I aimed for a balance between the warm center and the cooler background so the image keeps giving, the longer you look.
