Gimme a taste (2026)
Oils on 24x24 inch gallery stretched canvas

This piece is part of my Signs of the Times series, where I use ordinary images to examine the rules, limitations, and assumptions of American history. I think about a time when something as simple as a Black child enjoying an ice cream cone could exist within a world shaped by segregation. During Jim Crow, Black people were sometimes denied vanilla ice cream in public, with some areas permitting it only on the Fourth of July. Though this was a custom rather than an actual law, the recollection appears in writings of Maya Angelou and Audre Lorde, reflecting the arbitrary rules that shaped Black life under segregation. I wanted this boy to hold onto something that segregation could not completely take from him: the simple pleasure of being a child, enjoying an ice cream cone, and imagining himself free.

Come out to see it and other inspiring artworks at The Atlanta Art Fair, Booth D23, presented by Paul Conliffe.

Houston, this one is for us. Northbound is coming home.

I’m bringing my solo exhibition to Blue Prolific Studios October 3–November 1, with six new works featuring Houstonians created specifically for the Houston presentation.

The exhibition looks at the Black Southern experience through the people, memories, and objects that continue to shape Black life in Houston. It asks what survives, what we inherit, and what we carry forward.

And on opening day, I want to talk about it with you.

ARTIST TALK | 3 PM
Saturday, October 3

Opening Reception | 2–5 PM

I’ll be talking about Black and Houstonian collective culture, memory, and identity, and how those ideas live inside this body of work.

Come see the work.
Come hear the conversation.
Come be part of it.

I stole once. Literally one time in life. Of course I got caught. My grandma came to the store to pick me up. She didn't say much except, "Not you... Not you Karen. I'm disappointed."

That's all it took.
