The Garth Newel Music Center seeks to share, promote, explore and celebrate the infinite variety of chamber music in an intimate setting of natural beauty through high-quality performances by our resident piano quartet, educational programs, and personal interactions among musicians and guests. In addition to public concerts, our education programs include the Summer Emerging Artists Fellowship Program for outstanding young professional instrumentalists (ages 18-26), the Amateur Chamber Music Workshop for adults and through the Allegheny Mountain String Project, the regions only comprehensive K-12 string music education program serving three counties in the Mountain Region of Virginia.

🎹 Ten fingers. One Steinway. A whole lot of Liszt.

Some pieces push the piano to its limits—and Liszt’s monumental B-minor Sonata does just that! Expect dazzling virtuosity, dramatic turns, and music that will leave you spellbound.

This weekend, Jeannette Fang takes the keys for a recital you won’t want to miss, performing on our recently donated Steinway B. ✨

Sunday, October 18, 12-1pm, Offstage, On-Air is back with a live guest, Jeannette Fang, pianist in the Garth Newel Piano Quartet and Co-Artistic Director of the Garth Newel Music Center in Warm Springs, Virginia. Garth Newel is home to the Fall Foliage Festival in a beautiful natural setting. Jeannette will be talking about this and more!

Offstage, On-Air is a weekly show highlighting central Virginia’s vibrant classical music community. Each week you’ll hear conversations with local classical musicians, learn about upcoming concerts, and enjoy artist-curated playlists. Max built Isaac a… CELLO PODIUM! 🔨🎻

And it’s making its debut at our Fall Foliage concerts!

Why, you ask? 🤔

With our concerts taking place in the Manor House, there’s no stage to elevate Isaac and his cello. Enter Max and his custom-built solution! The podium gives Isaac a little extra height and helps his cello project and resonate in the room. Since Isaac plays seated while Teresa and Fitz can stand with their instruments, Max’s custom-built solution gives him a lift—literally! 😉

Who knew a little woodworking could make such a difference in chamber music? Come hear the results during Fall Foliage! 🍂🎶

Eight evenings of chamber music in a 1920s manor house, with 40 seats at each one.

Garth Newel's Fall Foliage Festival runs October 16 to 26 between Warm Springs and Hot Springs. Every concert starts at 6 p.m. in the Manor House, and a small-plates reception follows, included with your ticket.

THE PROGRAM
Bach's Cello Suites, Part 1: Oct. 16 and 18
Beethoven violin sonatas: Oct. 17 and 19
Jeannette Fang, piano, with Liszt's Sonata in B minor: Oct. 23 and 25
Bach's Cello Suites, Part 2: Oct. 24 and 26

All four members of the Garth Newel Piano Quartet take part: Teresa Ling, violin; Fitz Gary, viola; Isaac Melamed, cello; and Jeannette Fang, piano.

Tickets are $72, or $36 for students 18 and under, plus tax and fees. Pair two concerts on a Friday and Saturday or a Sunday and Monday to save 10%, and you can stay the night in the Manor House, built as the home of artists William Sergeant Kendall and Christine Herter Kendall.

Please join us in wishing a very Happy Birthday to Jordan Marshall Marshall! 🎉🎂

This past June, Jordan officially joined the Garth Newel team full-time as our Operations Assistant and Allegheny Mountain String Project (AMSP) Coordinator!

A Virginia Tech graduate with a background in music, Jordan has taken on an important role with AMSP, working hard behind the scenes to help get the program organized and running smoothly this year.

But Jordan’s contributions don’t stop there! He also lends a hand with grounds and facilities maintenance, livestreams our concerts, and jumps in to assist our event staff whenever needed.

This summer, he was an incredible help to our Emerging Artist Fellows, whether providing transportation or simply being there when they needed an extra hand. AND did you experience his musical moment during finale weekend? What a treat!

Through it all, Jordan brings a good-natured attitude, a friendly spirit, and a willingness to pitch in wherever he’s needed. We appreciate his many contributions and are grateful to have him as part of the Garth Newel team!

Happy Birthday, Jordan! We hope you have a wonderful day! 🎶🎈

What does Liszt’s Piano Sonata have to do with the divine and the diabolical? And why does Jeannette Fang call Liszt the original piano rockstar?
