Hornell Christmas Cantata

From its humble beginnings in 1992, the Hornell Community Christmas Cantata has grown to be a much anticipated holiday event. With singers drawn from many surrounding communities this volunteer choir has performed with as many as 140 singers to present an ecumenical program that celebrates the season. Ann's Church in Hornell, NY for audiences numbering as many as 1000 pe

ople. Past programs have included music and narration that retell the Christmas story. Other programs have featured classic and unique musical offerings representing the very best examples of a rich choral music tradition while accompanied by insightful holiday readings. The event is also a community fundraiser with proceeds of a freewill offering distributed to local charities selected by the choir. The program is annually scheduled on the Sunday evening of the second full weekend in December. Past directors have included Jackie Walker, Ralph VanDerLinden and Mark A. In 2019 we welcome our latest conductor, Natalie Crosby.

Dear Singers,

What a great first rehearsal last Sunday! We heard all of the music and sight read most of it. We will start rehearsing individual numbers this Sunday. Reminder: Rehearsal begins at 6:30 PM and ends at 8:30 PM.

If you missed the first rehearsal for whatever reason, please come this Sunday. Use the Church Street entrance to the church. You can sign in and get your music in the conference room, which is on the left when you enter the church. Someone will be there starting at 6 PM. We are asking for $25 to cover the cost of the music.

If you have a suggestion for a charity, please send me an email or give me your suggestion on Sunday. I already have the following suggestions: Hornell Area Humane Society, Faith in Action, Care First, RISEN (Fresh Start Church). We have three rules about the charity. (1) It must be a local charity, (2) last year’s charity is not eligible this year (that means the PRC of the Valleys is not eligible this year), (3) when we vote, the charity with the most votes wins.

Dear Singers,

It’s September, the kids are back in school, so 7 December is getting close. That is the date of this year’s Christmas Cantata. I have confirmed 7 December with St. Ann’s. Lisa Karr will be our musical director again, and she has already been at work. The cantata for this year and two additional pieces have been selected and ordered. She has been in touch with musicians for the orchestra.

Our first rehearsal is Sunday, October 12th in the United Presbyterian Church, Hornell. This rehearsal, and all other Sunday rehearsals will be 6:30-8:30 PM in the sanctuary. On October 12th, please come before 6:30 to sign in and pick up your music. We will be ready for you starting at 6:00 PM.

We ask that you pay $25 for the music. This includes the cantata itself, extra pieces, and a copy of the Hallelujah Chorus (if you need it). If you already have the Hallelujah Chorus, please bring your copy. The $25 covers the cost of the music and the scores that the musicians need, as well as shipping costs. Since we ask the singers to pay for the music, every dollar that we collect during the performance goes to the charity the chorus has selected.

We will perform the Christmas Cantata at 7 PM on 7 December at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. We will have a “dress rehearsal” in St. Ann’s on Saturday, 6 December, probably beginning at 10 AM. We will remind you about that as the date approaches, but please set that date aside for this very important final rehearsal (with the musicians).

Please sing with us. Encourage your singer friends to come. Under Lisa’s direction, we will bring another Christmas Cantata to the Canisteo Valley, and we will make a joyful, harmonious noise to the Lord!

Lisa has prepared a poster/flyer that you can print and post or send using social media. It is attached to this email.

See you soon!

Jim

P.S. One of our most faithful singers, Charles (Chuck) Flansburg passed away recently, succumbing to injuries from an accident. Chuck sang in the first Cantata with Mark Smith as musical director. I believe he sang in all Cantatas since then. He also designed and built the wooden frame that we place behind the altar to provide a base for risers. The pieces are stored in the attic at St. Ann’s. Chuck’s design is sturdy, easy to assemble, and easy to take apart. So Chuck will continue to be a part of the Christmas Cantata. We will include a memorial note about Chuck in the Cantata program. Perhaps there is something else we can do. Please keep Chuck’s family in your prayers.
