Week 2 of Kids Summer Art Camp!!
Today was our second official week of art camp, and the kids did so well, and had so much fun!
Again, to start the week off, we worked with Color Theory, Principles of Design, and Elements of Design. The kids got to collaborate on an abstract acrylic painting using key words they learned in their lesson, such as value, symmetry, line, etc., and identify each in their masterpiece! Afterwards, they worked on their own abstract pieces, focusing on color, texture, and contrast. We ran out of time to do our own color wheels, but we made up for it by really focusing on how each color relates to another, as we did our solo pieces. Overall it was a pretty successful day, and the kids had a lot of fun!
Tomorrow we jump in again and get to have even more fun while we experiment with the different types of liquid media! Last camp, the kids really enjoyed exploring different techniques, especially with watercolor, so I'm really looking forward to trying out new things with this very special little group of artists!
Yay for Kid Camp! :D
Week 1 - Student Exhibition!
We had a such an amazing week! Thank you to everyone who showed their support, who made supply (& coffee) donations, and who showed their interest in signing their child/children up! I highly recommend that if you're still thinking about it, take a look at these videos and see how much fun we had! It's worth it! So priceless to see how excited they got over something they created on their very own! They were very proud of themselves and loved showing off all they had learned and each of their beautiful pieces!

Kids Summer Art Camp - Day 5!
Today was the last day of our first session! The kids were just amazing and we all loved every second of our time together, learning and exploring the various ways of art and creation!
What fun!
Today we explored several types of sculpture making, as well as made masks, to learn about collage and mixed media!
With sculpture we explored geometrical shapes with wood, which we later painted, air dry clay sculpting, & rock sculpting!
This was MY favorite day, and I let the kids really get their hands dirty with this one and use their creativity, and I didn't ask them, but I think it was probably their favorite day too!
What an adventure this was! I am really looking forward to doing it again!
We have 5 more weekly sessions left, so if you haven't signed up your kids yet, you really should! These kids were all smiles and I'm guessing this is a week they will remember for years to come!
Follow the link to register online: www.renegaderedkidart.weebly.com

or stop in and get everything done in one go!!
P.S. Keep your eye out for our Student Exhibition video coming up in a few minutes, where the Kids got to show off their art to their family and friends, and then we shared a couple of slices of pizza, and talked all about their favorite moments and the different things they learned!
Only a few more days to see this show before it's gone! Bring your friends and family in this Saturday and show off the artwork of these awesome artists that live right here in our very own Grays Harbor! Exhibition ends Aug. 2nd.

Kids Summer Art Camp - Day 4!
We had a late start due to a dentist appointment. But we jumped right in after everyone was here and immediately hit the neighborhood for our printmaking field trip!
The girls and I scoured the neighborhood for different natural elements that would make good prints! After collecting a bag full of flowers, leaves, apple slices, pinecones and discussing the different types and techniques of printmaking, we wandered back to the gallery and dumped out our treasures! The kids then used tempera paint on paper to do a solid background in one or more colors, let it dry, and then tried out different greenery and found objects to paint and use to print on their backgrounds. When those were dry we cut white paper into rectangles, punched holes into the ends, sewed them together, and cut and glued our covers on, using the beautiful printed designs from earlier! These books turned out beautifully and now they have their very own sketchbook that they can take home and practice sketching with! :)
Kids Summer Art Camp - Day 3!
Today was Meet the Masters!
Master #1: Van Gogh
The kids learned Van Gogh's technique and use of color, while experimenting with oil pastels on black paper. We mimicked the famous Sunflowers painting by Van Gogh, but I allowed the kids to take it in their own direction, choosing color and petal shape on their own, while directing them in the use of contrasting pigments for highlights and shadow.
Master #2: Picasso
We had so much fun with this one! The kids explored humor in art, placing noses and ears and eyes where they don't belong, and using unnatural colors in an experiment of contrast and form, as well as learning the techniques of surrealism and cubism. They used marker to find form and filled it in with vibrant shades of tempera paint, then went back in with black paint to give them bold outlines, which allows the color to pop!
Master #3: Monet
We used acrylic on canvas panel to experience Monet's impressionism technique. This was actually their favorite, because even though it took the longest to do, they found the results very satisfying. And I must say... they turned out beautifully! Pastels and dot, dot, dots!
Master #4: Mondrian
We explored geometrical art and primary colors in a technique made famous by Mondrian. The kids used rulers and markers to create their bold lines and sharp shapes. Then we filled in a select few of the shapes with our primary palette in acrylic paint. This one got no love... haha. But there is value in learning geometrical art.
And finally Master #5: Rothko
Rothko is still entirely misunderstood by the layman population and I chose his work as their final Master to emulate, because 1. The end of the day called for an easier project. And 2. Because I wanted them to understand that art doesn't have to be complex, visually, to be moving. We talked about texture, color choice, and balance. The kids used chalk pastels on a white paper background to capture Rothko's famous style, blending with
Day 2 of Kids Summer Art Camp [EXPLORING LIQUID MEDIA] was a huge success!
We started where we left off yesterday, exploring acrylic, except today we tried out representational art instead of abstract. The kids made gorgeous paintings of a bird on a branch! After that, they played around with an alcohol ink technique perfect for kids! Drips and splashes and sprays and lots of color, on a white ceramic tile! After lunch we finished our acrylic paintings, and then moved on to watercolor, exploring four of my favorite techniques: salt, wax resist, water droplets, and plastic wrap! After that we braved a bit of oil, thinned down, which was quite messy, expectedly so! And finally... encaustic on wood (which we substituted encaustic with crayons and used blow dryers to melt the wax!
SO MUCH FUN crammed into one day! <3 :D
We had a very fun day down at the gallery today for our first official day of Kids Summer Art Camp! These kiddos are amazing, and look at these fantastic pieces of artwork!
