The fourth client whom I have had the honor of tattooing chin tattoos. Some know them as “111” tattoos. Throughout my years as a tattoo artist I have learned why tribes throughout California (and more) have taken steps to obtain their chin tattoos. Some individuals took extreme steps to obtain their markings so they can claim their status within the tribe while others were merely to represent their family name. Some even say, only the most beautiful women had chin tattoos. Whatever May be the case, we, as indigenous women are reclaiming our practices one tattoo at a time ✊🏽bringing back traditional practices, ceremonies, songs, storytelling, visions and commitments to a practice that has nearly been wiped out. Mya has made the commitment to revitalize Ohlone tattoo practices and after years of praying and visualizing her tattoos, a dream came to her, showing herself being blessed with the design you see today- a tattoo which is a variation of the documented tattoos you could see in her region.
Each tattoo, again, is dependent on a persons location and family practices. I am grateful, always to take part in these types of tattoos. At some points, I also am apart of the ceremony of fasting, praying, singing or listening and learning.
