🐝 MN Mosaic Guild at the Minnesota State Fair | Artist Spotlight: Sonja Wieber 🐝

We’re excited to add Sonja Wieber to our Minnesota Mosaic Guild State Fair artist spotlights! Sonja has work featured in two different buildings, including a Blue Ribbon winner, plus a few extra State Fair surprises! 🎉

Honey Wing of the Ag Hort Building:

Blue Ribbon: What’s the Buzz?
This is a mixed mosaic using dishes, tiles, and hand-made terracotta tiles. This is a whimsical piece. Sonja enjoyed picking out the perfect dishes to show the fragility of the bees’ wings.

Creative Activities Building:

A Rusty Friend
Mosaic using stained glass. This shovel commemorates the 1000 trees that Sonja and her husband planted on their property in Two Harbors after the spruce budworm devastated their many acres of Balsam Fir trees. She is a Minnesota Master Naturalist and uses her skills to ensure that the Northwoods continues to thrive. This piece was entered in the “Mosaics on a Non-Flat Surface” category.

Sonja The Duck
Mosaic using stained glass. This was a challenge piece as part of the Minnesota Mosaic guild to create a mosaic using a children’s story as a theme. It is a scene from Peter and the Wolf. Sonja always enjoyed hearing the oboe (portraying Sonja the duck) in the orchestrated version of the story and was enthralled as a child that the duck had her name!

As an added bonus, Sonja has two recipes published in the 2026 Minnesota State Fair cookbook (and multiple ribbons on display in the canning department of Creative Activities)!

So when you visit the fair, keep an eye out for Sonja’s work — and her ribbons and recipes, too! We love seeing the many ways our Minnesota Mosaic Guild members share their creativity at the State Fair. ❤️

Next in our Minnesota Mosaic Guild artist spotlight series is Liz Taras!

Liz has a beautiful micro mosaic bracelet on display in the Creative Activities Building at the Minnesota State Fair — and we’re excited to share that her piece is a BLUE RIBBON WINNER! 💙🏆

We’re continuing our Minnesota Mosaic Guild artist spotlights with Lisa Van Wyk, who is excited to be exhibiting again at the Minnesota State Fair — this year with two pieces in two different categories!

📍 Creative Activities Building

🐻‍❄️ “Arctic Gaze”
A striking polar bear mosaic created with Smalti glass, tile, beads, and china. Lisa’s love of nature is often a source of inspiration for her work, and “Arctic Gaze” captures the quiet presence and beauty of this iconic Arctic animal.

🌀 “Twisted”
An abstract sculpture of black, red, and gold forms twisting upward from a wooden platform. The piece incorporates Smalti glass, beads, and rock, creating a bold combination of color, texture, and movement.

Lisa is thrilled to be exhibiting again and to have work represented in two different categories this year!

It’s OPENING DAY! 🎉 And we’re continuing our Minnesota Mosaic Guild artist spotlight series with Lynn Hagen, who has three entries in this year’s Minnesota State Fair!

✨ MN Mosaic Guild at the Minnesota State Fair | Artist Spotlight: Sushila Anderson ✨

Our next Minnesota Mosaic Guild artist spotlight is Sushila Anderson, and she has a special presence at this year’s Minnesota State Fair!

🌿 “Enchanted Garden”
Sushila’s beautiful stained glass piece, “Enchanted Garden,” will be on display in the Fine Arts Building at the fair.

But that’s not all! Sushila will also be featured in Studio: HERE, where visitors can watch her work as a glass artist in a studio-away-from-studio setting. The Minnesota State Fair describes Studio: HERE as a combination of artist demonstration and performance.

✨ MN Mosaic Guild at the Minnesota State Fair | Artist Spotlight: Rachel Arntson ✨

Next in our Minnesota Mosaic Guild artist spotlight series is Rachel Arntson, whose award-winning mosaic “Weaving Through the Fabric of Life” is on display in the Fine Arts Building at the Minnesota State Fair.

🎉 We’re excited to share that this piece has already won an award — and has SOLD! 🎉

Rachel’s work brings together her love of travel, photography, glass, and found objects. For this piece, she combined the brilliant, light-catching quality of Italian Smalti glass with a weathered antique cigar form purchased in Belgium. 🇧🇪✨

The piece explores the delicate relationship between us all — our lives woven together through peaks and valleys, sometimes connected and sometimes disconnected.

Rachel describes mosaic-making as therapeutic, allowing her to combine her philosophical thoughts on life with her love of travel and collecting unique materials such as glass, rocks, metal, and antiques.
