Answering questions from the mailbag:

Dear comedy guy,
Help! how do I write (lots ) more material??
I need to double the length of my show and it takes forever to come up with funny stuff for the act.
Signed,
Cal in Kalamazoo

Dear Cal,
No worries - much of what I do is help acts write new material, sometimes a whole new show. Here is what I tell students who want to double the funny:
1. Write more. Lots more. Are you writing everyday? Are you free writing, brainstorming and going three levels deep before giving up on a premise?
2. Get a writing partner or group.
3. Sharpen and deepen your character/ viewpoint.
3a. Explore your own weaknesses ans prejudices.
4. Work your way through a comedy writing book.*
5. Get a Netflix contract for a one hour show.
6. Trust yourself
7. Get dark. Very dark.
8 write your act as a stage show (fringe?) or as a book.
9. You can deduct mileage.
10. Teach a class.
11. Its work. Treat it that way

I am starting up two online comedy classes this month; one for pro's and another for beginners.
The pro class will cover advanced things like creating a new piece, editing, polishing and how to increase your humor out put.
The beginning class will cover joke writing, creating routines, and tools to get stated.
Pro class will be once a week, during the work day ( central time) and the beginner class will be on a weeknight, likely M, Tue or thu. Drop a note in the comments if you'd like an invite to either class
