🎙️ One of the reasons I still love recording music after all these years is that you never really arrive.
Tracking and mixing are lifelong skills. Every album teaches you something new. Every session makes you a little better.
As musicians, we're not trying to hide behind technology—we're trying to capture the sound of real instruments and real performances, then enhance them just enough to bring out their best.
That's what keeps me coming back.

🎸 My goal isn't to make a mix that's packed with effects.
My goal is to make the songs stand out.
A little EQ. A little compression. Some tasteful reverb and delay—especially on the vocals. That's usually enough if the performance and recording are solid.
Effects should support the music, not distract from it.
The better the song and the tracking, the less you have to rely on bells and whistles.

🥁 Every band has a different recording process. Here's ours.
The first thing we do is find the song's tempo and record a rhythm guitar to a click track. Then we add a scratch vocal so the drummer knows exactly where every verse, chorus, and bridge begins.
When the drummer records, he's listening to:
🎵 The click track
🎸 The guide guitar
🎤 The scratch vocal
That gives us a tight performance and keeps every instrument perfectly aligned for the rest of the recording process.
It's a simple workflow that's served our band well.

🎙️ "We'll fix it in the mix."

It's one of the most common phrases in recording—and one of the biggest traps.

The better your sound is during tracking, the easier everything becomes later. Great mic placement, good performances, and strong tones will always beat trying to rescue a bad recording with EQ and plugins.

One trick I learned from a master mixing engineer was to give instruments their own space by emphasizing different frequency ranges. When the bass, kick, and guitars each have their own place in the spectrum, the mix becomes clearer without fighting for the same frequencies.

Get it right at the source. Your mixes will thank you.

🎛️ New to recording? Here's the simplest way to think about it:

Tracking is recording the instruments and vocals.

Mixing is taking all those individual tracks and blending them into the stereo version everyone hears on Spotify, Apple Music, vinyl, or CD.

That's where panning comes in. Some instruments stay in the center, while others are spread across the left and right speakers to create width, space, and clarity.

Understanding that difference is one of the biggest steps toward making better recordings.

🎚️ Sometimes the best thing you can do for your music is let someone else hear it first.

After living with a song for months—or even years—you stop hearing it objectively. Sending your stems to a mixing engineer gives your music a completely fresh perspective.

I've had mixes come back with ideas I never would've considered, and sometimes those unexpected choices made the song even better.

You don't always need someone with famous credits. Sometimes you just need someone with fresh ears.

🎙️ One of the biggest lessons I've learned recording our latest Silverseed album:

In the analog world, you push the levels. In the digital world, that habit can actually hurt your mix.

For years I tracked way too hot because I was thinking like a tape engineer. More level isn't always better—leaving yourself headroom makes mixing much easier and helps prevent clipping on your stereo bus.

If you're recording your own music, this one lesson could save you hours of frustration.
