Andrew Mau creates an eclectic and inviting space within Islandboy at 307c Kamani St., tangent to fishcake. Though the store’s name might imply Mau only features men’s clothing, it’s a bit of a misnomer. There’s clothing of all kinds, as well as furniture pieces, décor, jewelry, and beauty and wellness products.

Within the fishcake space sits Apothecafe Hawai'i, where kitchen witchery—as owner Thao Nguyen calls it—takes place. The food and drink she features on her menu are plant-based concepts that showcases what she grows in her “secret fairy garden plot."

Many thanks to Kaka‘ako VERT for the shout in their newest issue, and to fishcake for having me... and Krystle Marcellus Photography taking pro pics of me, when she's in town🌌💜🧚♀️
The West Village district, home to the ever-popular Kakaako Farmers Market and Victoria Ward Park, also includes a charming array of shops that range from gourmet food to home furnishings and beyond, like Bali Aga Lifestyle, fishcake, JANA LAM, and Kieselbach Woodworks
Starting off with Keiko San's tea ceremony Intro, yesterday at fishcake ... the first cup tasted different from the second cup. Same amount of water. Same amount of matcha. But the temperature of the water made a difference. First cup was hotter, the matcha was tastier. Second cup, due to quicker cooling, I could taste the quality of the tap water.... it wasn't as good.
Lessons, all the lessons; But one stood out, this week. It was like the serendipitously Synchronized lesson: Enjoying the present moment, while learning how to truly enjoy what you have, IN THAT MOMENT, and not squirrel it away somewhere, Never to be seen again, 'til YEARS LATER like some time capsule...
(bc the olive oil was too nice, too expensive, and too precious to use up- when it was fresh. Because the delicate silk handkerchief was old, and passed down to you, and all of your mothers, and grandmothers wore it, before you. Because you didn't know when you were going to be able to buy a nice nug of w**d, again.. so you ration it so GOOD, that by the time you get back to it, it's brown & stale. You get my point, right?)
This morning, I TIRED. But it's the 4th week Cúng, for my mom. I tore myself outta bed, to carry it out.
I made something simple, ma. Lemongrass tea with butterfly pea. Grated turmeric and red cabbage leaf jasmine rice. With shiitake mushroom miso soup, and a quick gỏi salad.
Even though, I personally have evolved and don't be showing up at no Buddhist "temple" every Sunday, giving them all my money, like most elder Vietnamese relatives I know🙄...
out of respect & Most importantly THOUGHTFULNESS for my Mother, it's the damn least I can do, to Honor my mother's sacrifices(no matter how silly I saw them, during the rebellion years) It didn't go in Vain, ma.
I know that it would have made you happy, so I'm doing it. I'M CÚNG(ING)🙏
