Sulu‘ape “Steve” Looney of Pacific Soul Tattoo has been tattooing since the early 1990s, and has spent time getting back to his roots and honing his craft over the decades. He started off inking friends and family while living in Southern California. From there, he picked up and moved to Samoa to learn more about his heritage.

“I started leaning in that direction as far as my art and the type of tattooing I was doing,” he explains. “I had a strong connection with my culture already, so I wanted to learn about the art. Being there, the imagery is everywhere. It’s printed on the walls. I picked up a lot of it.”

It’s why Samoan designs feature prominently in Looney’s work. In fact, 100 percent of his Polynesian work is done all freehand.
