I was invited to create a Get Out The Vote poster for my home state of Hawaii with Project 270. The goal is to maximize voter participation among 18-38 year olds. In Hawaii, when the Hawaiian flag is upside down it means our nation is under distress. (For example, recently it was hung upside down during the Mauna Kea telescope protest) I wanted to focus on the children being the largest in the painting as they are our future that we are voting for as well as symbolizing hope as they are in the process of flipping the American flag right side up.
There is a poster created by a different artist for each state. Check them all out as they're free to download at www.project270.org and 75 limited edition prints are available through the Kickstarter (link in bio). 100% of profits will go towards this national GOTV campaign.

Souls in Motion (After Bosch) triptych, first panel.

When I was a little kid I had a reoccurring nightmare of swimming in the ocean into the deep, but always turning back since my biggest fear is deep ocean water. One day I pushed myself to keep swimming until I couldn't see the shore anymore and I kept going further out until I eventually reached an island. The island was inviting and warm and there were people dancing with torches and fire and I joined them.
I had a flashback to that dream while painting this which played a significant role in the direction I took to finish it. It's interesting how that same dream has taken on another meaning to me now as an adult.
We're all just doing a complicated dance that's part of an even bigger and more complicated dance, might as well see the warmth and love while doing it 🧡

Detail of 'Souls In Motion'. Deer are regarded as sacred beings in Korean Taoist folk art. Legend has it that the common spotted deer eventually becomes a fairy Deer. After living 1000 years, its coat turns grey. After 1500 it's coat turns white. After 2000 years its antlers turn black and the deer is immortal. As a pair, they additonally symbolize conjugal bliss 💒
