Backyard Buoys will be part of an ocean research exhibit at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska from May 15, 2026 to May 15, 2027!

Opening this Friday, May 15, the Anchorage Museum will have an awesome new display about marine science and community observing in Alaska. It will be up for a year, so go check it out!

The exhibit was primarily funded and organized by NPRB and features several AOOS-supported projects, such as harmful algal bloom monitoring, Backyard Buoys, gliders, and moorings.

The Wave-Driven Flooding with Sea Level Rise viewer for East Babeldaob, Palau is now available as a beta version on the PacIOOS website!

Developed by the PacIOOS Wave-driven Coastal Processes Research group (WaveCPR) at the request of the Palau National Weather Service, this interactive tool enables users to assess projected coastal flooding along the eastern coastline of Babeldaob under different combinations of sea level rise (SLR), wave conditions, and mangrove coverage.

This effort was made possible through strong collaboration with partners in the Republic of Palau. We gratefully acknowledge the Palau Automated Land and Resources Information System (Palaris Palau) for providing high-resolution topobathymetric data, and David Idip (PALARIS) for coordination and support.

We also thank the Palau National Weather Service for their continued collaboration, and the Coral Reef Research Foundation(CRRF) for their guidance and assistance in identifying vulnerable coastal areas and supporting validation efforts.

Special thanks to Xavier Erbai Matsutaro, National Climate Change Coordinator at the Office of Climate Change, Government of Palau, for his strong support and valuable guidance. The viewer remains under active development, and content and features may continue to evolve.

The Waimea Bay buoy is back online!

Moored approximately 4 miles offshore Waimea Bay on the North Shore of O'ahu, the buoy transmits wave height, direction and period every half hour.

The Waimea Bay wave buoy is owned and managed by PacIOOS. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) provided the initial funding to purchase this buoy. Data are managed by the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Long-term partnerships between PacIOOS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and CDIP enable data streaming into the PacIOOS website and PacIOOS Voyager.
