Did you know that this is one of the only (and largest) snakes in Hawai’i? 👀

His name is George, he is an albino Burmese python, and he is 11 feet long! He is also one of the only snakes you will ever legally see in the state.

There are actually no snakes native to Hawai’i. 😳 They are kept out to protect native birds that evolved without a predator like this, and the Honolulu Zoo holds one of the only permits in the state to house them.

His color is the giveaway. Most Burmese are brown and black. George has albinism, which means he makes almost no pigment, so he turned out white and gold instead.

Come by and meet him! For a lot of our visitors, he is the first snake they have ever seen in person.

The song of the white-handed gibbon, a duet performed by a bonded pair. The female leads with a sequence called the “great call,” and the male answers. In the wild, it travels more than half a mile through the rainforests of Southeast Asia, marking territory and reinforcing their pair bond.

This is Japan and Bono, our white-handed gibbon pair.

Their species is . Habitat loss from logging and capture for the illegal pet trade has driven steep population declines across their range. The forests where their songs once carried are growing quieter.

That’s what makes protecting this species even more important, so that voices like these continue to echo for generations to come.

Come meet a 100 yr old turtle this weekend for tomorrow! 🐢

Some of our tortoises have been here since 1932. Naturalist Charles Townsend brought them over as younglings when the species was disappearing fast, which means a few of our hero’s you’ll see today helped save their own kind!

And down the path you’ll find the one of the rarest tortoises on the planet. Only a few hundred are left in the wild.

And there are so many more species to come and explore!

Across the world, these animals are still here because people chose to fight for them. Honolulu Zoo is part of that fight. Through our AZA accreditation, we participate in Species Survival Plans that help safeguard endangered populations for the future.

You’re part of it too. Every visit, every membership, every share is a small vote for these species to exist.
