“Synchronicity beyond description! So many of the stories and experiences that inspire the work of the Lei Pua 'Ala Q***r Histories of Hawai'i project can be seen and felt in what [LOVEY LEE] playwright Moses Goods calls ‘a Superhero origin story’ … See the perfect cast in this poignant Kumu Kahua Theatre production before it’s too late”

Mahalo Joe Wilson for the kind words about LOVEY LEE! There are still two performances happening at Kumu Kahua this weekend—tonight at 7 pm and tomorrow at 2 pm.

For tickets, call our box office at 808-536-4441 or visit kumukahua.org!

LOVEY LEE is a coming-of-age story set in 1970s Hawaiʻi, amid the cultural renaissance in the Islands and the sexual liberation movement booming throughout the nation.

This is a time of reclamation, discovery and pride. But for Lovey Lee, a young q***r Hawaiian whose journey is complicated and fraught with challenges, the ‘70s is about finding a place where they can just be.

Join us at Kumu Kahua Theatre for LOVEY LEE, with performances tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

There’s still save time to save your seats—visit kumukahua.org!

“Lovey Lee – a street name – is a gay native Hawaiian who returns home after a year as a closeted gay helicopter door gunner in Vietnam. ... [Sean-Joseph] Choo is a powerful presence throughout.

“The production is also brilliant Po‘okela Award-worthy work by director [Reiko] Ho. Her casting choices, her deployment of the superb ensemble cast (most of whom play multiple characters), her integration of the actors’ performances with the work of the tech crew, combine to make this Kumu Kahua production ‘must see’ theater for anyone who can handle the true-to-life street-life vocabulary – all the words that cannot be used in the mainstream print media, or on mainstream radio and television – and the frank portrayal of the mahu culture in Honolulu in the 1970s.

“... In short, the original production was powerful Po‘okela Award-worthy contemporary local theater in 2020. ‘Lovey Lee’ is even stronger and more powerful when experienced “live and in person” on stage at Kumu Kahua on 2024.”

Mahalo John Berger for this thoughtful review of LOVEY LEE! Experience this play for yourself this evening at Kumu Kahua Theatre; performances of LOVEY LEE run tonight to Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The September Go Try PlayWrite contest is on!

This month’s Kumu Kahua Theatre and Bamboo Ridge Press playwriting contest prompt is a joke prompt. First write a joke at the top of the page. The joke does not have to be an original joke you made up. It can be a joke you heard. Then write a 10-page maximum scene dramatizing the joke.

“Knock knock” jokes, “why did the…?” jokes, “did you ever notice” jokes, and so on. Any joke you’d like to see acted out. Also, you can just use the joke as inspiration for the scene. You do not have to have a chicken crossing the road… or, you can, if you like.

Our favorite script receives $100 and a subscription to Bamboo Ridge! You have until September 30th to submit at kumukahua.org/gotryplaywrite.

Good luck!

Never been to The Work? Here are the rules: In front of a live audience, both directors will be allowed a limited amount of time to stage the same—yet unrehearsed—scene using the same actors. The audience will watch both performances and will judge who did it best!

“No, no. You need a street name, a ‘Lady of the evening’ name. Lovey’s cute and all but cute won’t get you any tricks. Unless you’re me that is. You need to add something... ‘more’ to it. Something... sensual.”

Don’t miss LOVEY LEE tonight at 7 p.m. and tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Kumu Kahua Theatre! Written by Moses Goods and directed by Reiko Ho, LOVEY LEE follows Lovey, a young q***r Hawaiian looking for their place in 1970s Hawaiʻi, amid the Second Hawaiian Renaissance and the sexual liberation movement booming nationwide. The journey of any brave pioneer is often complicated and fraught with challenges, especially in this coming-of-age story.

Mahalo to KHON2 News for featuring Kumu Kahua Theatre on a recent episode of Living808! Harry Wong III joined host Mikey Monis to discuss the plays of our 54th season, the importance of sharing local stories, and ways to get involved with Kumu Kahua.

"[Kumu Kahua presents] a chance to get to see yourself on stage," Harry says. "All the media that we consume almost have nothing to do with us. And when they do, it's usually not representative of who we are. Everything that you see on the Kumu Kahua stage ... These are are the things that we're going through right now in the community. Or things I didn't know about Hawaiʻi."

Enjoy the Kumu Kahua stage this weekend with performances of Moses Goods' LOVEY LEE tonight and tomorrow at 7 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm! And mark your calendars for Monday, September 9, for the return of The Work, where Jason Kanda and Reyn Afaga will go head-to-head directing a new script by Anette Arinix.

See you soon at the theatre!

“‘Hōkūle‘a,’ star of gladness. A shining beacon of knowledge from the Polynesians of the ancient days. ... Using only the stars, the wind, and the currents of the sea, this astonishing canoe managed to sail over 2,000 nautical miles. ... This extraordinary group of voyagers from the tiny islands of Hawai‘i has the entire world wondering ‘What else is possible?’”

“About ten years ago, House Bill 444 was about to be passed in the senate which would legalize civil unions between gay couples. ... I had tuned in to the evening news that night to watch the coverage of the rallies and testimonies and then, I saw it. It was a kukui nut lei, but not one that you would ordinarily see. Each seed on this lei was a different color of the rainbow,” writes Moses Goods in his playwright’s notes for LOVEY LEE.

“I had already known [the wearer of the rainbow kukui nut lei] for several years prior and had developed a deep respect, admiration, and love for him, but something about seeing him on that television screen changed something in me.

“He stood there, for all the world to see, with his hip pushed out to one side, with his wrists bent and with his hair long and flowy, qualities that we’re taught not to associate with being a man. In that moment however, the definition of a man was re-written for me and for the first time in my life I had a gay role model to look up to...”

“[LOVEY LEE] is an exploration of māhū culture in Hawaiʻi. The story is powerful, sometimes dark, filled with the passion of the era, and at times, hard to bear witness to—a story that I have never seen depicted on stage before. I feel very grateful to be part of bringing it to life,” Reiko Ho writes in her director’s notes for LOVEY LEE.

“It has been a great honor to be in the room with this amazing cast and production team in an intentionally non-binary, q***r space. The rich discussions, insights, camaraderie, and joy during rehearsals reaffirmed how important it is to hold space in our community for these stories to be told. We honor those, like Lovey, who forged the path, and acknowledge how far we still have to go.”

LOVEY LEE opens in two days at Kumu Kahua Theatre! To learn more about this powerful play by Moses Goods, visit kumukahua.org/program.

There’s still time to save your seats for opening weekend now at kumukahua.org/tickets. The show runs Thursdays to Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.—don’t miss out!
