The tortured artist is a long-known trope, but Monet truly was his own toughest critic. In 1908, after dedicating three years to work on a new set of paintings, Monet decided 15 of his newest creations didn't make the cut to be displayed in a new exhibition of his work in Paris. He took a knife to the canvases and destroyed the would-be masterpieces - the show had to be postponed.

Monet’s second wife Alice wrote to a friend, “Today Monet is so very frustrating; he has just told me that he would definitely refuse to have the exhibition. He punctures canvases every day, it is truly distressing. One day, things are not too bad; the next day all is lost.”

Water Lilies is arguably one of Monet's most famous pieces of work - he loved the flowers so much he had one of his six gardeners row onto the pond and dust off the water lilies before he began painting! 🎨

Although Monet's gardens are loved in person and on canvas today, his neighbors weren't fans. After Monet purchased additional land in Giverny, his neighbors petitioned the city to block Monet's expansion out of fear his aquatic plants would poison the water and kill their animals.

The neighbors lost and Monet expanded his garden. It's a good thing too, had he lost we would have never gotten his "Water Lilies" series!

🌸 DID YOU KNOW 🌸 Monet's struggle with cataracts greatly affected his ability to distinguish his go-to range of cool colors, so many of his paintings from this time are dominated by yellows, oranges, purples and reds. He underwent corrective surgery in 1923 and was disappointed with the results.

He found it difficult to adjust to his new glasses and complained about seeing distorted shapes and exaggerated colors. There's a clear difference between his pre and post-surgery paintings, though we'll never know exactly why.

🌸 DID YOU KNOW 🌸 Monet loved to paint "en plain air", or "in the open air". Painting outdoors allowed him to better capture the changing details of weather and light.

He had this to say about working in a studio, "I never had one and personally I don't understand why one would want to shut themselves up in some room. Maybe for drawing, sure, but not for painting."

The popularity of the en plain air movement was aided by two things; the box easel and paint in tubes. These innovations allowed artists like Monet to take their work anywhere 🎨
